Default Playing Euro games on a North American PS2

Ok, I probably won't have much success with the answers I'll get, but it's worth a try.

Is there any way for someone in North America with a PS2 (and a NTSC TV) to play European PS2 games at all? There's a series of European karaoke games called Singstar and my favorite French singer has a few tracks on two titles of the series.

is there any way to play the games here on my PS2, while having only a NTSC TV?

Yeah, a mod chip will work. I've got my slim PS2 modded with a DMS4 chip and can play PAL games on it without any problems. It even has a y-fix option that automatically adjusts the screen size to fit on NTSC tv's (without it, the screen is usually 25-35% enlarged while playing PAL games and you can't see the whole screen).

Those PS2 PAL games that support 60Hz mode are actually outputing NTSC. So if the Singstar series does support 60Hz mode then all you have to worry about is getting past the region security. So mod chip or Swap Magic. Or HDloader with a HDD, installing the games using a PC.

(man, I miss the edit button)

If you don't want to go thru the trouble of getting your PS2 modded with a chip, *I think* you might get the same success with a flip-top or slide card mod but you'll have to make a backup copy of the game and patch it with a NTSC fix. I'm not positive if you can do that with the flip-top/slide card methods though.

    That's good to know.

And the PS2 model is the second one, the slim factor one. So nevermind the HDD option.

i'm pretty sure they do, although i haven't touched them in a while. Which french singer do you mean? cause there's at least different UK and Germany versions of SingStar and probably France too and your wanted songs might be on the french editions only. Watch out when buying

    ... i didn't even know these were euro-exclusives

Well there is actually the following versions:
    Singstar
    Singstar Party
    Singstar Pop
    Singstar 80's
    Singstar Rocks
    Singstar Anthems
and Singstar Legends is out soon,

technically if you want all the singstars you have to buy all the
different region version of Sinstar Pop and Legends as they are
made with the specfic countries popular singers,

I am so supprised that the USA has not recieved this as it is my
best selling series on the PS2 here in Australia, infact it would be one of the
highest grossing series ever here in Aus,

As for 60hz mode I am close to 1oo% sure they dont all support
60hz, infact maybe none of them doo, they do however support
the eyetoy for the visual pleasure of seeing how much of a nutcase
you are to be playing a karaoke game

Singstar, Eyetoy and Buzz are the BIG BIG BIG christmas selllers
here in aus and I can honestly say that Singstar will be a huge console pusher
for sony with the PS3, infact the console will be succesful in australia
    for this fact alone

It's the first Singstar game and Singstar Rocks.

The French singer is Sinclair. He has 3 tracks on Singstar and 2 on singstar Rocks

Must be the French version then Sarah, cos I checked the UK listings for both games and no sign of him.

Unfortunately there's no track listing for the games on Amazon.fr so I can't say for sure.

FYI, Singstar does not support 60hz mode. The fiancee and I were SOL on this one after picking up a copy in Italy. Also, I started a thread about playing PAL PS2 games on a NTSC setup a long time ago, but I never going an answer that worked. If the game doesn't have a 60hz mode, I don't think it can be done unless your TV will support it. Maybe someone knows differently, but that's what I know from trying.

Damn, then I guess I might as well look for real karaoke tracks of his songs -- even though he had some hits here, I never saw any of them in local karaoke songbooks.

Does anyone know if Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy has a 60HZ mode? I wanted to play the Xbox version but I figured if it has a 60Hz mode, I could just buy it for the PS2 and buy a Swap Magic disc...

Use USBExtreme and an external USB harddisk. Works as good (as i was told) as HD-Loader / HD-Advance...

You've been lied to most likely. It's horribly slow, buggy and useless from what I've been told.

Hi-jacking a thread for a bit but need to know about JPN mods. I want to play Zombie vs. Ambulance but what needs to be done on a slim silver PS2? Are standard slim mods find and where is the best source for the region chip?

Most most chips will do the trick. I believe the silver ps2 is in the range of v14-v16. So look for those numbers when you are reading the modchip compatibility. Divineo.cn has good prices on chips and very fair shipping ($5). If you are on a budget, the Modbo 745 and XenoPS work well. They are both clones of the Matrix Infinity and they worked well in the several ps2's I have installed them in. They are the same as the original except they lack the firmware upgrade feature.

Don't buy any of the solderless modchips. Those are junk. They aren't as reliable as soldered in chips and the installation can be a headache.

I have personally tried USBExtreme just out of curiosity and it is horrible. I loaded one small game (Sega Sports Tennis, ~500MB) and the load times for longer than reading from the disc. If you have the chubby ps2, HDLoader is one of the best things out there. Load times are faster and no more swapping discs. If you have a modchip that supports dev1, you don't even need to use a disc to load up HDLoader. Boot from memory card.
