Default Sony explains overheating problem at tgs

    http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?op...=3930&Itemid=2
Sony Said "the 200 PS3s at TGS were grouped closely together in poorly ventilated in kiosks causing overheating issues and subsequent failures" according to the article. Sony also said it could be high temperatures at the TGS venue according to the article also.

BS. Those fancy Xbox 360 kiosks have no ventilation for the sysems and they don't have to be reset. At least the ones i've seen don't have to.

It's another one of sony's quickly made up, half assed launch units.

It could be a fast made unit yes, but its also possible that its true what they say. 360 is a different machine that might not generate as much heat as the PS3. Doesnt suprise me if the PS3 generates more heat than the 360 because of the more powerful HW.

Were the PS3 units final rev units or just demo units? If they are not the final build units they might run a little hotter than normal. Plus the Xbox 360 kiosks have final production run units in them.

I am not defending Sony I am just saying this could be a valid explanation. Working at a engineering firm, I can tell you when we bring out a new product and take samples to shows, the units used as demos look a mess if you ever took the cover off. But the final run production units are a different story.

    Tha is my .02. YMMV

So basically this means when we put our PS3's underneath our tvs on top of our DVD players and next to our Nintendo WII's the groupiing of hardware will cause the PS to fail.

I've read there were test units according to Kaz Hirai.

Blocking the places where the air gets out will overheat the machine yes, that goes for all electronics. Some machines have higher limits on how much heat they can stand.

Note to Sony: build kiosks that won't end up embarrassing you when showing off your newest toys.

The real problem was they somehow managed to rig a PS3 with a Sony laptop battery and it almost exploded and had to be recalled

Didn't alot of the launch 360s overheat? Isn't that why MS extended all launch system warranties to 1 year. These are test units so it is not that important.

If the PS3 runs hotter than the 360, it's gonna be China Syndrome time baby!

After reading the title of the thread, I was expecting Sony to at least try and justify the problems, maybe by saying that "these are just demo units" or something. What they did though is flat out say in public that they make poor hardware:
"The 200 PS3s at TGS were grouped closely together in poorly ventilated in kiosks causing overheating issues and subsequent failures". So consoles these days are so badly made they can't handle a little heat? What happens when you're playing in the middle of a hut summer day? Or, as already suggested, what happens when you put it next to your other audio\video equipment in your living room?

I could go on another rant saying how Sony (and MS) need lessons in building efficient hardware, but there's no point. Thousands upon thousands of people are going to be spending $600 for the console, plus another ~$100+ for an "extended warranty", plus another ~$50 for a 3rd party, better cooling system, plus...ah, why do I even bother...

In short: poeple who buy a PS3 at launch are sure going to get their moneys worth... :/

Burn baby burn. What's hotter than a redlined 360? A fried PS3 or a Sony laptop battery.

It's actually the fault of the utility company. Sony specifically requested precooled electrons.
