Default Getting a PSP for christmas

My brother is giving me his PSP for christmas due to him not using it.

I hated the PSP when he got it, it was very uncomfortable in my hands, and I am usually against Playstation products (mainly due to a ps controller not being comfortable in my hands)

Anyhoo, I'm still excited to receive a PSP, but I have a few questions.

I have a gameboy advance sp. Should I sell it seeing as how the PSP has a gba emulator, or keep it? I could use the extra cash.

how does the psp work for internet/online gaming. Do I have to pay for a service, or is there free hotspots or whatever?

Anyway, that's about it. His friend put all the good stuff on the psp (access to emulators and whatever other fun stuff you can do) so it should be quite cool.

Emulators can't do everything and online play is free in games that support it up to this point. EA does try to charge, but have a sponsorship to cut the fee out entirely. All you need is an (spam) e-mail address.

I know emulators can't do everything, but as it is, I really don't enjoy portable gaming as it is.

I never take long trips, so it's kind of pointless. It was a gift though (from the same brother) and I normally don't like giving away/selling gifts.

but if the psp can somewhat handle the gba..

    Thanks for the response though.

Actually there was a REALLY good GBA emulator that was released last month. It's not perfect, but it runs a lot of GBA games at full speed. Good ones too like Fire Emblem, FF Tactics Advance, and the Castlevania games. Not 100% compatible with all GBA games but the list of the ones that do work is pretty long.

Yeah, web browsing is free too.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Whatever you do, don't install anything higher than the 2.71 firmware on the PSP. You'll be kissing homebrew on your PSP bye-bye if you do.

Can I install higher on the memory stick using devhook? like have 1.50 on my psp and 2.80 (or whatever) on the stick and have a 'dual boot' ?

I decided to sell the gameboy on ebay due to not needing two portable systems. I hardly use it, and I think the psp will get more use out of me.

Yeah, the 2.71 (or whatever you want) firmware goes on your memory stick while your PSP still has 1.5 on it. You just load Devhook up whenever you want to run UMDs/ISOs.

I think think there is a way now to load homebrew in Devhook now with 2.71, but I haven't messed with it. I just keep all my homebrew one memory stick and Devhook+ISOs on the other.

That's a nice brother I have a 1.5 PSP myself and I'm kind of like you. I never really play it.

As far as emulators, I really like the NeoGeo CDZ emulator. Works absolutely prefectly. Other than that, it is hit and miss for the most part. In fact, I'm about to sell mine on ebay.

To go along with this thread, I just found out that my parents, who know how crazy I am for older games and RPGs, are getting me a mint copy of Valkyrie Profile. They know I've been looking for it for a while. So, Christmas day is going to consist of eating and playing VP all day

Actually you shouldn't update the system any higher than 2.0.

Emulation is the only thing I used my PSP for, And after I updated it to 2.6 I never use it. Ever.

True, I was just saying that you'd still be able to downgrade to 1.5 if 2.71 was on your PSP. Anything higher than that though you're stuck with (for now).

Okay so I got my PSP a little early from him.

He had a 1.0 gig stick in there with some stuff, but nothing worked on it so I formatted the card.

    The firmware is 2.71.

    So I have a clean card and a 2.71

Can anyone PM/post me info on what I need to start running emus and what not.

There is so much on the psp forums that I am afraid to get the wrong thing and brick my psp like a bricked psp.

Thanks for all your future help.

Hey, I got a eBoot loader for 2.6 now, So I can play the emulators on the go again. I haven't been keeping up with the homebrew scene, But now I can say that If you want to update to 2.60, Go ahead, because you can play the emulators on 2.6 now.

Here is a link to the eboot loaders:

    http://hackingthepsp.com/Homebrew_Ce...Launchers.aspx

It looks like You can update to 2.80 And use the eboot loader, But I wouldn't reccomend it. (Not every homebrew game or emulator works in an eboot loader, And you can't downgrade once you're at 2.80, And did I mention that You can emulate firmware 3.0 and higher?)

well right now on it there is 2.71

All I really want to do is run some emulators. So I just need to know exactly which package to get in order to do so (the newest and noobiest the better... I have no idea what I am doing).
