    Default Question for PSX collectors

Have any of you ever heard of (Or even seen) Blue-back PSX (Yes, Blue-back PlayStation 1) discs? I was looking at an auction for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Origenal version), and it says in the discription it's quote "RARE BLUE-BACK DISC".

Is there such a thing as Blue-back PSX games, or is this guy selling a bootleg game?

If you hold up some PS CDs to the light, you'll see that it's not in fact black, but actually a dark blue.

This is very prominent with GH/Platinum releases.

I have quite a few of those "super rare" discs, I should sell them on eBay at "rare" pricing.

Truthfully, never believe what's in the title of an auction, especially on eBay. I have two SotN games (One greatest hits, other is a loose original) but I can't recall if both have the dark blue data side but do know at least one do. There's also a handful of others out there, like Haoie said, that are greatest hits and some that aren't. Variant wise you shouldn't worry much about getting a black and blue unless you're real serious about it. As for what's so great about the blue I'm not sure, maybe a different material that makes the disc more scratch resistant, longer lasting from rot, or maybe they ended up running out of the black colored material and had to go with blue? I'm sure someone else would know that and may chime in.

Very true words. Almost everything is titled "RARE!! WOW!!" on Ebay.

Yeah I've seen the "blue/black" disks on a couple different games, I always just assumed it was a production flaw. Even saw on one occasion where the game was a weird translucent blue/green. Ended up getting rid of that one though, looked too wierd. (and the game sucked)

Yeah not to mention the fact that they continually try to convince people that the super mario/ duck hunt cart is two games for the price of one. Yet they charge as thought it was in fact to different games. I would not be surprised if people pulled the same kind of crap with the colors of a disc.

Depending on the disc art itself and how much light it lets through when you hold the disc up to the light you'll notice that the disc bottom is actually a deep blue/purple similar to the CD based PS2 games. Its just that showing through. It's nothing thats anymore special or rare.

So the cover and the type of printing they use for the art is the factor of when it's blue/purple? Was it due to a cheaper manufacturing, happened to be easier or maybe ran out of the other "stuff". Would be currious if that's known.

Not that its cheaper, just that when you've got a GH title there was little to no cover art on the disc and with the silver (normal cd top) to the disc its easier for the light to go through. When doing the GH titles they did everything they could to make the making of the discs cheaper which is why there is no color to the disc art or just the very plain labels. However some cover arts just took in more light when looked at closely.

As far as I know all PS discs were actually manufactured by Sony and shipped back to their respective companies upon completion so its not like the publisher was doing something to skimp out on the discs, or that there were majorly different stocks of media that were used for the games.

Yeah, if you run across a psx disk with no artwork at all, its just a copy of the fifth element.

Boy did that screw my up the first time I saw a copy of that game.
