Default Software Emulation: When did it start?

When was the first software emulator created?

    (Note: I said software... not hardware.The 7800 doesn't count.)

Well, I do remember a rudimentary C64 emulator as far back as '95 or '96 so probably a decade for homebrewn emulators. I do know there was a commercial software DOS emulator for Macintosh in late '80s.

    Default 1st emulator

I typed a Vic-20 emulator into my C64 so I could play my Vic 20 games on it. It was published in one of the Commodore mags, probably Compute's Gazette.

the first emulator I used was crossDOS on the Amiga.. it emulated a dos 5.0 intel based machine. I actually ran infocom games on it.. that was maybe 1989-90..

A PET emulator was available for Commodore 64 back in '84. All it did was to remap some memory locations (screen location, etc.) but it was still an emu.

There were a couple emulators written for the sinclair for the C64 and some emulators written on the ti-99 back in the 80's
