Exclamation "iD" 's Secret Project ....

    Here's the latest skinny ....

"There's going to be a novel look to our next-generation technologies. Once it's out there and people look at it, people will see the wisdom of pushing things data-wise instead of procedural-wise on large data sets.
We can ... get away from the tiling, and repeating, and stuff like that, for all the surfaces across the game." -- John Carmack

Translated out of programmer-speak, this means that rather than generate game environments on the fly,
they can go back to hand-detailing every aspect of the game world.
How they're going to manage that without sacrificing the game speed is anyone's guess, but if anyone can do it, it's Carmack.
We won't find out for a while, however; the game won't ship for at least another two years [Emphasis Mine] ....

    WOW!! lol

    Thoughts ?

carmack is a brilliant programmer, so i have every bit of faith that he (and of course a team of tallented iD programmers) are going to make this happen, and personaly, i cant wait.

Thoughts? Post a source when you quote an article, please.

Apparently what Carmack is saying is that bandwidth and memory have improved enough that we can just draw large maps over everything. Hooray! Who didn't see that one coming (Quake Wars was your warning)? I had thought of it years ago (and I suspect most everybody else did), but of course computers weren't nearly sophisticated enough to make such an idea work. Of course, with this first game I will have to wait and see how much this mega-texturing philosophy is actually used. It doesn't make much sense to have dark corners, far-away areas and the like be rendered with as much precision as he seems to be promising. On the other hand, it could promise some very stunning scenery and for the first time really give you visual cues - imagine FarCry's jungle, except with unique plants, I suppose. That'd be for the future; I wonder if this first game won't mostly be limited (as usual for an iD game) to architecture. One can hope.

I must admit that I'm surprised it's actually around the corner - I almost think that Carmack is talking about things that will only happen in the next five years, if DOOM III is any guide. Doubt my new 640MB graphics card will be up to snuff then, but I'm hopeful.

Exclamation Here's Where I Got It From

I got the quote from the January 2007 issue of "Games For Windows".

    Exclamation Oh MAN !!! lol

    Steve Jobs ....
He knows what we want ....

John Carmack's new gizmo is requested by him ta show it for Macintoshes at the WDC07 !!!!
    Here's what John said ....

"For the last couple years we've been working in secret on next-generation game technology.
Today's demo will be the first time anyone's seen this publicly.
What we've got here is the entire world covered in unique textures.
    20GB
[Emphasis Mine -- CaryMG] or so of textures covering every surface of this racetrack.
Developers can change any object -- change the texture, carve their initials on a rockface, etc. --
with no impact on the stability or performance of the game.
We can even have 6 artists working on the game at the same time ...."

A demo is expected later this year.

    EDIT:

I only now noticed "diskoboy" has started a topic on this very subject ! lol > "iD Shows Off New Engine"
My apologies for the mixup !
