Default R.O.B. the robot issues, works but not all of it!

I purchased a R.O.B., complete I think, Gyro spinner thing, two spinners, the gyro holder, and the red/blue button control pad holder.
I had to clean out the oxidation from both battery compartments, and it works! One problem...
I can't get it to press all the way down on the red or blue buttons to lower the column, then it won't raise up. It is responsive to left to right, and down, just not enough to press the button and it won't raise it's arms at all. What can I do to fix this situation?
I have two basic food groups, fast and frozen.

Probably something gummed up in the gear housing. Take the whole thing apart, clean and lubricate all the gears and toothed surfaces, reassemble and put it through the motions a few times. It takes awhile to do this, so take your time and make sure to keep track of how things come apart / go back together.

A little late on this but here go's. One of the gears is probably coming loosse of the metal bar. If you open it up you will see what I am talking about. if you use some good glue it should fix it right up. There is a guide on the net to taking it apart and repairing it. Ill look it up and post the link.
