I noticed that there were 2 versions of this game released. One in the older black dvd case and the newer in the blue dvd case. The barcodes on the back of the cover also had different numbers. Anyone know what other differences there were?

from what I know of, you have already pointed out the only differences.
For some reason they change the barcode for different pal regions, then what happens
is if there is excess stock in one region they will ship it to another region that is
lacking on the said title and all of a sudden you have a variation!.
At least that is what happens to us out here in australia.

And here in the states Ring of Red can be found pre-owned for around 7 dollars. This is a very good price for such a good game.
