One thing I've never been able to figure out with these 'less than 25 were ever made'- why bother making thewm in the first place? Can't imagine there would be much profit in there unless they were specifically made for collecting.

But yeah, I'd probably have said NWC gold carts before seeing the other replies in this thread.

There's an owner list over at AA in which I believe 11 have been accounted for, but many people suspect the production run to be higher than that because it uses a normal blown ROM not an EPROM.

Given there's at least 11 known out there, Atlantis II is way behind many others with lower known copies in existance. It's only just ahead of Ultima: Escape from Mount Drash (for the Vic20 on tape, probably the highest ranking non-cartridge) which has 12 known copies currently (one of which is sitting in my collection).

"European" rather than UK - from what I've heard, most of the 5(?) known copies were found in Germany & Austria.

What about that Atari birthday cart?

Interesting! I hardly ever venture (no pun intended..) over to Atari Age, no clue there was an owner list. Also, I didn't know it was on a ROM and not an EPROM! Learn something new everyday here on Digital Press!

There are plenty of 1-of-a-kind arcade cabs out there too...

European in Neo-Geo terms is for a American release with the famous box style (look at any AES game after 1991, like Metal Slug European version). (don't ask why we call it European).

Neo-Geo AES was never release in Europe (I never saw a European Neo-Geo AES box with the word PAL on it, NEVER!).

But for that quote, I COULD BE WRONG!

Super Sidekicks 4: The Ultimate 11 European version is known to be the rarest Neo-Geo ever (with even a lower print run than Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle).

In my point of view, the "European" version of Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle is the most costly cartridge in the world. I saw a copy going over the $10,000 mark not too long ago.

We Neo-Geo fans are rich sometimes.

Thanks for the schooling... DOH! I'm not a comic book person so to me it's all the same. I mean no offense to anyone who might take the "it's all the same to me" line out of context. All I know is that there were licensed comic book characters that SEGA didn't pay to use in the 1st and possibly 2nd batch of Super/Revenge of Shinobi cartridges. Since there are more of the later releases I'd say that makes the earlier ones Rare.

Yes, there is. No one knows what it's called, though, because no one has ever run across a copy of it.

It's supposed to be super-rare but I've heard that it's just the Japanese version with a UK-insert and that game text is in either Japanese or English depending on the console it's played on. Anyone know for sure?
This is the case with all Neo games; the language displayed is dependent on the system BIOS. But yes, the only difference between the $600 Japanese version and the $12500 Euro version is the insert, manual and label. But then, there's only 4 Euro copies known to exist.

And yes, there are PAL AES systems, but a simple mod gets you back to 60Hz.

Bio Force Ape for the NES. Only 500 printed, only 182 known to exist, just one game mag appearance in Nintendo Power. You won't go into a game store and snatch up this baby.

It's so rare it is even hidden in the DP Online Rarity Guide.

Ultima: Escape from Mount Drash scares me.

How many 1000's did the last one on eBay go for?

Hehehe, it's cool. I'm just a big Marvel junkie, so I had to correct you.

The rumor is that there were only two copies of "it" produced, but Disney ended up putting both copies in "The Vault" so we may never know . . .

    Exclamation

Everyone has heard of BattleSphere for the Atari Jaguar right? Well, the developers of that game released a one-of-a-kind BattleSphere cart called "BattleSphere Trio." I forget the details of it, but I think it sold on eBay for over $1500 a year or so ago. It was auctioned brand new from the makers on eBay and I do believe all of the money went to diabetes research.

IIRC, Atlantis II is a "contest" piece sent out to winners. Does that count as "produced?"

What about the Campus Challenge cart for NES with Pinbot and Dr. Mario and Super Mario Bros. 3?

If we use the NWCs as a medium, then we should include that cart as being just as rare, non prototype.

We can't go by the definition of ROMS and EPROMS because some production games on certain systems have EPROMS.

WHat about Cubicolor for 2600? SOme of these are hard to call.

The Neo Geo stuff is really an insert/manual difference for Ultimate 11/Kizuna Encounter.

My idea is that the really uberrare stuff is kind of on the lines of what Mayhem has mentioned: crazy Commodore 64 stuff.

For 2600, not counting wacky crap like the birthday cart or contest pieces, the mail order Video Life is silly rare, and any Gauntlet that got out with a box, manual, and label is infinitely hard to locate, downright impossible.

I am getting one unreleased arcade game (undumped) where only two exist total, and I used to have one called Tenth Degree where I know less than 5 boards probably exist that I sold to the designer of the game.

I think there are plenty of games with a production run of only 1. I think when you get down to it it's like this:

1.) How much is the game going for? (What's the buzz?)
2.) Can it be reproduced or emulated (always the question these days)
    3.) How good is it?

There is tons of one-off stuff for Commodore 64, but unless it's the unseen miracle of 8-bit gaming most people won't care.

Personally, I would have to say that prototypes of some of the old shooters would be amazing to find

The loose ones have general sold between $500-800. The three complete ones on eBay that I recall finished on $3,605, $2,635 and $1895 (didn't meet reserve) I think.
