I never abused it and didn't use it all the time with every game so I don't thihnk I wore it out. It didn't get flaky and then stop working, it just stopped completely.

In my repair experience, a sudden and total failure is usually a cable issue. There are always exception, but if I was fixing it, I'd replace the cable first, and then go from there.
I was given a totally dead XBOX "s" controller for free. I went inside, snipped the cable, and soldered in a replacement. BINGO. I really like my free 's' controller.
