I hear its more cpomplicated than that. Something about the motherboard being he issue. I think the ebay fixes are quick money makers on desperate people trying to avoid the envitable.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I'm on my 3rd 360.
The latest fix is replacing the x-clamps that hold the heatsinks on the cpu and gpu. It seems to be really successful so far, but it requires a full disassembly of your 360. Obviously if you have any warranty left you don't want to try this.
Here's a link to the steps. The users over at xbox-scene are reporting almost 100% success with this fix.

Unfixable, if you define fixed in the problem does not return ever. OSG spent more than 200 shop hours and thousands of dollars on more than 100 XB360's to learn this.
We get e-mails every day that read "So and so on Ebay has fixed my 360 3 times already, and it's broken again, can you fix it?"
I save these people money on shipping by telling them the above.

i dont hjave a 360 but i see alot of them with the 3 leds and i have been thinking of getting a 360 in general.
the 3 red le;d error to me sounded like a heat problem how ever i dont really ever see what the cause is, just these "solutions" that fix it for a little while.
it may very well be something you cant fix but it seems like its something worse than the 72 pin connector in a NES.
has M$ fix this issue in any newer revisions of the 360?
I am only replying to this to see if anybody knows specifically what usually causes the famous "ring of death" error described. I though I heard once that it was some sort of RAM failure, presumably because of overheating, but I have been unable to find where I read that.

To answer your question the reason why the xbox 360 gets the hardware failure(3 red lights) is pretty simple to understand. On the board you have the CPU and the GPU, the most important chips on the board. The clamps that hold the heatsinks onto them ( cools them down to keep proper temperatures) Actually bends these very important chips rite off the board. When these chips bend they are not 100% connected to the board anymore. This is what gives you the 3 red lights. The good news is that there is a permanent fix that will fix it for EVER!! In order to do this you have to bolt the heatsinks to the board and the metal casing. When you bolt these heatsinks down with GREAT pressure it pushes the chips back onto the board. This approach will keep the chips there for good this time!
I don't own a 360 myself, I was just curious because it is such a infamous issue with the 360. Also, I am considering when I would purchase a 360 myself. I wonder why Microsoft would go so long without simply changing the way the heatsinks are mounted? If this is the case, then there is no guarantee that a smaller chip with make the system any more reliable.

Well heres the thinbg the 90NM chips make the board so hot which makes it possible to rip those chips off the board. If you use for example a low energy chip like the most anticipated 60NM chips it wont heat the board to such an extent that the board can warp from the clamps. The newer chips would fix this problem.
