Default Comparison of Samurai Shodown on All Consoles

Since Matt doesn't seem to like to promote his own work, allow me to direct you to an interesting cross-review of the original Samurai Shodown game as it appears on multiple consoles, and it's similarities, differences, pros and cons for each.

Thanks Joe! I always feel cocky when I start pushing my own stuff. Don't know why, but I always have. As for the typo, I now feel like a dumb ass. 2 years of college right down the tubes.....

I love articles like this! Like the guy who does "The many faces of" for Retrogaming Times. With music, if it's something I really dig, I'll probably want to own it on record, cd, tape, 8-track, etc., and I'm kinda like that with games if it's cross platform.

Also, I dig the irony of the previous post.

I'm pretty sure there WAS an artery spray in the Genesis version of Samurai Shodown, although it's ridiculously tough to do. You see the characters get sliced in half far more often.

I prefer the SNES version myself, barring all the censorship Nintendo was so prone to back in the day. The smaller sprites, I'm sure, were more for speed issues than including more of the playfield.

This game would have been perfect (in theory) for the 32X, when you consider the scaling trick used in Cosmic Carnage.

I tried for hours to get it and I even researched it, but nowhere could I find any info on it. I could've sworn I've seen it too. I tried multi-player and everything. Any screenshots?

I'll run the game at home and see if I trigger the blood spray there. I'll probably use a save state just so I can deliver the death blow over and over again, rather than playing through entire rounds for one shot at it.

Maybe someday we'll get a perfect home port in some sort of "collection" package, but until then, just try and ignore the minor differences and you'll be just fine.
Um, there's been an arcade perfect home port of the game for years. And it can be found for 20-30 dollars. Neo Geo homecart.

There is no scaling in the SNES version because it simply wasn't possible. The SNES' Mode 7 could only rotate and scale a single *background*; it had no sprite scaling / rotation abilities whatsoever. That's why the cars in F-Zero come in so chunkily; they're not scaled, but rather redrawn repeatedly, the old-fashioned way.

Any time you *think* you see an actual sprite scaled or rotated on the SNES (ex: boss of world 2 in SMW) it's really just the programmers tricking you. It's a background you're seeing scaled / rotated. :)

I mention that at the beginning of the review. I'm comparing the readily available ports for the more readily available consoles. All of the are compared to the Geo version since, technically, it IS the aracde game. Not really a port when you think about it.

Dude don't worry about it. Happens to the best of us sometimes even with spell or grammer checks. Great reviews though.
