Default Great Sega CD games, not sure what to get

I just got this system yesterday and I'm totally lost as to what to get for it. Sonic CD is all I'm familiar with. Any suggestions?

Sol-Feace is a good shooter, and its relatively cheap. Its the same game as the genesis version but better music.
If you are willing to drop some cash, I would get popful mail of shining force cd.
Pitfall for sega cd is also awesome.

The Sega CD is such a great system. Anyone who dismisses it as "just having a bunch of FMV crap" is doing a great disservice to themselves. It has a lot to offer in quite a few genres.

You really cant go wrong with any of the RPGs, Strategy and Adventure games. Titles like Lunar and Lunar 2, Popful Mail, Dungeon Explorer, Shining Force (My favorite installment in the series), Dark Wizard (EPIC strategy game), Eye of the Beholder (Arguably THE definitive version of the game) will keep you busy for a looooong time.

Then there are some fantastic Shmups like Silpheed, Android Assault and Lords of Thunder. All three game are some of my favorite shootem ups ever made.

There is also the The Terminator which is friggin' awesome!

Even some of the "Upgraded" genesis to Sega CD games are worth getting imo. Games like Wolf Child, Batman Returns, Micky Mania, Spiderman (I dont care for this one but a lot of people seem to.) and some of the others have quite a bit of added content.

If a god is willing to prevent evil, but not able, then he is not omnipotent. If he is able, but not willing, then he must be malevolent. If he is both willing and able, then why is there evil? If he is neither able or willing then why call him a god?

If you like strategy or rpg games, Dark Wizard is a must.

Some others well worth looking at:

    Lunar Silver Star Story
    Lunar Eternal Blue
    Snatcher
    Rise of the Dragon
    Vay
When I come home from a long day in Hell, there's nothing I'd rather reach for than a fire-brewed bottle of Styx Beer. Made from the filthiest waters from our own River Styx. Styx Beer is a third more toxic than any other regular beer. The worst beer - the filthiest beer - the deadliest beer. It's Styx Beer!

Thanks. I did pick up only 2 games so far, Star Wars Rebel Assault and Tomcat Alley. Tomcat won't play, for some reason, and Rebel Assault is a real frustrating game and the graphics are confusing. But it's not bad. It's an early 3D game that really doesn't work that well. Kinda like Sonic 3D Blast. Ambitious, ahead of its time, but doesn't quite work.

I was aware there's more then just the FMV, tho, which is why I got the system. Sonic CD is the only one I've played, on Xbox Live Arcade, and having played all the classic Sonics, CD is probably my favorite. Amazing. I know it's not exactly the cheapest system to collect for, but we'll see how I fare.

Most people seem to have the RPGs covered (I don't like Vay though) so here's my opinion on other stuff:

Popful Mail, buy it or just download it. It's a blast to play and one of the better localizations WD in my opinion. My numero uno favorito game.

Ground Zero Texas is cheesy FMV fun
Sewer Shark is a fun game too, and a solid packin that is cheeeeeap to buy still.

Soul Star and Novastorm pull of some awesome effects and have good gameplay

Keio is a anime styled cute 'em up.

Terminator and Micky Mania are also very solid.

The best thing is there is no copy protection, so you can burn the games to regular CDs if you find an ISO online to test stuff out.

Don't forget Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep (its also available on PC but I heard it was originally a Sega CD game)

The Sega CD port of Prince of Persia is my personal favorite version of that game.

Final Fight on Sega CD is the best home port on a 16-bit console.

Supposedly Mansion of Hidden Souls is awesome but I never got to play it.

Even if a person is into FMV games, you can't go wrong with Revenge of the Ninja. I've also heard that the Sega CD port of Road Avenger is the definitive port.

If you like fighting games Eternal Champions might be worth a look. It's pretty hard, though, and can be frustrating as hell. Even though it has the same title as the Genesis version, so you might think it's just a port, it's really more of a sequel, with a lot more stuff in it.

There's also Mortal Kombat, but with the load times (even during the Shang Tsung fight when he changes forms...) I can't really recommend that, unless you really want to see grainy FMV footage of a Mortal Kombat commercial.

I think most of the rest I would recommend have already been mentioned by others, anything by Working Designs, Shining Force, Mickey Mania, etc.

I'll hafta take my time with the RPG's, lookin at the prices which, to no surprise, r up there. Not as bad as Saturn, but up there. Definately a sidescroller guy and shooter guy, too, so i'll hafta dig into some of these. Not because they're too expensive, I'm just a stickler about any disc based games I get being complete in box. Cartridges I'm more flexible, but for some reason I'm not that way with disc games.

I will echo what several other people have said: Look into the RPGs, especially Lunar and Lunar 2. Also consider Shining Force CD if you like strategy/RPG hybrids.

Agreed. Popful Mail is my #1 Sega CD game.

I played the Lunar games on the PS1 so I can't comment on the Sega CD versions but if they are as good on the Sega CD as they were on the PS1 then yea, those too.

I think Ground Zero Texas is one of the most underrated Sega CD games. I know it's a cheesy FMV game, but it's cheese done right. Maybe it's just cause I bought the game when it was first released, and I thought it was really cool back in the day.

Sewer Shark is actually a pretty good game if you give it a chance. Again... cheesy, but in a good way.

I like Final Fight CD. The driving levels in Batman Returns are really cool, and although the side scrolling levels kinda suck, the music is pretty damn good, even on the side scrolling parts. Ecco the Dolphin CD... love the music. Jurassic Park... A weird game, but I still want to play it more. I was stuck in a certain part of it... Sol-Feace, great music.

Jurassic Park for Sega Cd is really neat. Its a point a click game where you have to collect dino eggs. There are certain areas where you have to react to the dinosaurs really quickly. The T-Rex is kinda hard to get past but the raptor pit is really hard. Its a cool game because its really not like any other Jurassic Park game.

Heh, glad to know there is someone else out there who likes these titles, I normally get flack from people for liking them. The later Digital Pictures games were just not that good as their earlier stuff IMHO.

It has its charm, but on Hard it's almost unplayable because the poor graphics make it impossible to see enemies, and you don't have targeting help anymore. The 3DO version of Rebel Assault is better.

Wirehead is a pretty fun FMV game. Mansion of Hidden Souls is short but atmospheric and easy to play, and Panic is a truly bizarro trip.

I've never played the SEGA CD version, but the Genesis version is insanely, frustratingly difficult. Those water tubes into the sky...god.

I havent played it that much, but im sure its a tough game. My copy of Tides of Time has spent much more time in my CD player than my sega cd system (redbook).
