Default Ikusagami- 65,000 characters onscreen PS2

The game's chief claim to fame is the scale of its battle scenes -- on PS2, the game allows for as many as 65,535 characters at once on the playable battlefield, with real 3D soldiers in formation as far as the eye can see.

    Impressive...most Impressive

And Dynasty Warriors 5 could only manage like, 100. Psh. Damn underachievers.

I'd believe it when the game was in my PS2 and I was playing it. This isn't the first time a ridiculously lofty claim has been made about the PS2, only to have users severely disappointed when the actual product is on shelves. If that many characters are on the screen, they must be untextured, unmapped .. the absolute most basic models the system can output without being straight polygons.

The PS2 doesn't have enough memory to allow for that many characters on screen and active at once. So what gives, anyone have a clue?

    Hmmm well see

Hell I would be impressed if ANY CURRENT-GEN SYSTEM could do this without stuttering to 5 frames per second

You never know what those nifty programmers can do with so-called "old" or "outdated" hardware though just look at Panzer Dragoon Saga or the original dev/ver of Shenmue on Saturn

There has got to be a ton of slow down with that much action. Heck, even the top of the line computers could barely do that at any descent framerate. :/

But does every one of those sprites have full motion? Now that would be impressive!

Watch the video on ign, (The above posted link) It looks like most of those characters aren't accessible until brought up front. (I.e.) You really aren't fighting that many objects at once, but the 100 or so around you with the background sprites in the distance makes it look that way.

Looks fun though. Reminds me of Dynasty Warriors meets sword of the Berserk. Minus the blood.

Pretty much my thought. Just because you can render the scene doesn't mean shit. To be impressive it has to meet these req's.

    1. Must consistantly run at a minimum of 30fps. NO DIPPING BELOW EVER.

    2. All soldiers must be runnings seperate AI routines (or be under small group routines, NO SCRIPTING). No standing in the background waiting to die.

    3. All characters must have a reasonable amount of detail. No dropping distances soldiers down to like 3 polys.

Meet those and i'll be impressed.
