Default PS1 Discs and CD Audio

If I may be so bold... If a Playstation game uses CD audio, is it possible to rip it using an ordinary PC CD-ROM drive?

Here's the story: I purchased a used copy of Encore Software's Pinball Madness 2 a while ago, and while it's great fun, the version of Pro Pinball Timeshock included with the package has had its CD audio stripped. After checking around, it seems that this was an intentional move by Encore Software, who published the bundle.

After much mucking about with the tech support people, it occurs to me that I might be able to simply rent the Playstation version of the game from somewhere, rip the CD audio from it, and ultimately put together a fully functional CD of the PC game. Unfortunately, I have very little experience with Playstation CDs and do not know if this is possible.

As long as it's using regular redbook cd audio, this should work.

Might be a lot of trouble tho. Is it worth it?

Actually, I've heard that there are utilities for extracting non-redbook format PSX game music from the discs. But memory fails at the moment as to just what the utilities are called... :/

What, you mean that fancy new PSF format? Like C64 SIDs, it is not an entirely straightforward process to create those. (They can be awfully large in size, too.)

I'm assuming that since the PC version uses redbook CD audio, the Playstation version will too. Or is redbook CD audio something very rare on the Playstation?

I think it will be worth it, as Timeshock is a pretty cool game, aside from the lack of music.

Actually, in my experience (that is, throwing all of my Playstation discs into my CD player once last year out of curiosity), the majority of Playstation games do not use Redbook standard audio for the music tracks.

But I tell you what. I've got a copy of Timeshock at home, and while I haven't checked whether it uses Redbook, I'll check it for you at home tonight. After some thought, though, I'm betting that either it doesn't, or else that only the music (and not voice samples) would be in Redbook. (At least I'm pretty sure that Timeshock has voice samples. I've got all four of the PSX Pro Pinball releases, so I get confused, but I think they all had voice samples.) Also, the discs that have Redbook audio tend to be things like first-person shooters, where the music either runs straight down a playlist or else loops a single track for the duration of a level. The audio in the Pro Pinball games changes pretty often in response to the table's condition. But I'll check.

There are definitely some good games with Redbook Audio tracks, one that springs to mind is the vastly underrated 3D shooter "N2O", which features the entire "Vegas" album by Crystal Method. You could pop the CD into your CD player and listen to the entire music CD!

Similarly - ANY PSX game that "plays" on your CD player is candidate for ripping MP3's. Maybe we should start a list! Yeah!

It's always about the lists, isn't it? And jolly right! Lists goooood.

Jorpho, I must apologize, as I forgot to check my copy of Timeshock last night. I will try harder this evening.

Well, the PC version I have still contains voice samples. That, at least, is not Redbook.

    Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Jorpho--I finally got around to breaking out my copy of Timeshock! for PSX and throwing it into my CD player. The answer is yes. The music tracks are on the PSX disc in standard Redbook format, so you can play them in a regular CD player or (as you would like to do) rip them and do whatever you like with them.

I just know it's possible to rip them, though, so I can't give you any "how to" help...

    Following up, here...

This page lists a number of utilities that can be used to extract and view or listen to various files on PSX discs:

    http://www.zophar.net/utilities/psxutil.html

Some of the links are broken, but at least you'll have an idea of what to google. If you want PSMplay, then you can go to:

    http://www.ngemu.com/psx/tools.php?page=movies

That site also has other stuff.

Woohoo! There should be no problem ripping them with CDex, then. (Ooh! Version 1.50 Final is out!) If all else fails, I can just feed the CD output into my soundcard and record it manually.

Now all I have to do is find a place that rents it...
