    Default PS3 game cases

just wondering what everyone thinks of them... they're somewhere between the size of a CD case and the size of a DVD case... so unlike all the other modern systems, PS2, XBOX, GameCube, XBOX 360, Wii, you won't be able to replace them with a standard DVD case... you'll have to find a way to get empty cases direct from Sony... prolly exactly why they're a different size...

They are alright looking but they are going to be a bitch to replace, unless thats the way all blue-ray discs are going to be.

We had this discussion a while before the Forums went down...my opinion of them hasn't changed much since then. (In before needless hating of PS3 cases!)

Blu-Ray movies come in a case that's the same height and width but about half the depth, and it's blue. HD-DVD's come in the same case as Blu-Rays but it's a deep red color. The clear, thicker cases so far are only PS3. All of the variants have the format logo on the top of the front.

ah, so the difference is to distinguish them from DVD's huh? interesting... I never thought of that... I guess it makes sense... but if I were collecting for it, I'd be upset that the cases weren't the same as all my DVD cases were...

At least the HD format pushers could decide on a standardized case!

I agree with general consensus here. These PS3 cases stick out like a sour thumb, and thats not good.

I can't imagine what the "Collectors Editions" will be like.

I much prefer the standard DVD case to these.

I just think it is more of a conservation thing. I remember when cd's were first sold they were in huge boxes and the that was eliminated. I predict all cases will get smaller. I am suprise there were no groups complaining and boycotting.

Same with PC games (atleast over here). Before every game got released in big boxes, now they are all (99%) in DVD cases, i hate that. I dont think many will use the energy to boycot a case format hehe, its what inside that counts

I think it's clever to start, for the same reason I thought switching from CD cases to DVD cases for the PS2 was smart. It's a subtle way of letting the consumer know you've updated the product. And I think sticking out is a *good* thing. Why would you want your product to look like everybody else's?

The 'finding blank cases' point is moot to me, as I refuse to use regular DVD cases for games anyway. My PS2 games come in blue DVD cases, and I can buy empty blue DVD cases as easily as I can buy blank BluRay cases at this point (i.e. not at all).

Since when has replacing collector's edition cases been a major concern? OH SHIT I LEFT MY COLLECTOR'S SPECIAL ED TIN IN THE CAR AND IT MELTED, BUT I WANTED TO SELL IT ON EBAY FULLSTOP

That goes for everybody worried about replacing PS3 cases as well. Have faith in the companies churning out sports titles, please. They'll continue to create crappy games that will be good case donors.

Finally, why is it bad that Sony decided to make PS3 cases different from Blu-Ray ones? I mean, imagine the embarassment when you slip Metal Gear Solids into your Blu-Ray player 20 years from now*, and your kids have to correct you.

*I'm not asserting that Blu-Ray will still be a "live" format at the time.

Dude, DVD will still be a "live" format. Movies sold for $3-5 at truck stops. Totally possible.

I honestly see Dreamcast GD-ROMs outliving the DVD.

Oh, I'm not complaining. Except for the thickness of the PS3 cases, all three are the same. They're also all smaller and thinner than DVD cases, so they take up less space. If you want extra cases, just suck up to the employees at places like Toys R Us (they get empty cases for display boxes) or Blockbuster (they can switch the coverboxes for black cases). I have a box full of PS2, Xbox, and PSP cases. I'm working on getting a few 360 and Wii cases right now. I'll start on PS3 cases next spring.

Original cases come in really handy when you get one that's ruined with stickers or been sliced when the case was opened. I've replaced quite a few EB Games cases because their pre-merger stickers didn't like to come off.

How are these cases going to be any harder to find a replacement for than PS2 cases? I don't know about you guys, but I never replace my game cases with generic DVD cases (they don't have the memory card holder and specially colored plastic. PS2 cases are actually dark blue)... and I don't need to. In my collecting I always come across an extra game case or two.

And whats this about being disappointed in PS3 cases being a different size than DVD cases? Newsflash: They aren't DVDs. Just as DVDs came in different packaging from CDs, it makes sense that high definition discs come in distinct packaging. I'm looking forward to adding PS3 games to my PlayStation shelf, and PS3 cases being a different size than PS2 cases doesn't bother me any more than PS2 cases being a different size than PS1 cases.

And in that case (pun lol) it makes sense that Wii and 360 games come in DVD sized cases, because they do use regular DVDs.

Now the red PS3 tab on the spine of the cases?.... that does look kinda bad. I'll have to get used to it.

The thing that bothered me about these cases are storing them. All my gaming shelves are spaced specificly. and having to work in an off size is kinda a pain in the ass. PS2, xbox, gc, 360, and wii are all the same standard size. It's been a nice run for building standard shelves.

I'm sure the people who collected CD media felt the same way before DVD and their cases came along. Standard sized shelving is a neat idea, but we live in a world of obsolesence. It was never meant to be.

What do I think of them?

I think they're wasteful, ugly, repugnant pieces of shit that are aren't just a step, they're a LEAP, backwards from standard DVD cases.

Anyone know the width? Are they as wide as DVD cases? Otherwise it's going to be just like cartridges trying to line them up evenly. At least if they're the same width they could look halfway decent next to a DVD case, like DS game cases next to standard game cases.
