For people with experience with both, what are the main differences between the two?

PSN has random connection errors and disconnects, especially when using media connect, Xbox Live doesn't. <----Not during gameplay
PSN has a clunky user interface, Xbox Live doesn't.
PSN has much more open environment, Xbox Live doesn't.
PSN is free, Xbox Live isn't.
Now we are talking about the actually interface/store/GUI here, if we get into actual "gameplay", PSN wins. I'm sorry, but dedicated servers setup and maintained by the actual developers beats the hell out of Xbox Live's filtering process.
I've always said it and i'll still say it, playing games online on Xbox Live SUCKS when it comes to lag. Ever since the original Xbox, every single game I ever played on Live lagged. On PSN when playing games, I'll be damned if I have seen lag in any of the games outside of a slight hiccup once in a blue moon. This is coming from someone who has played and knows, not some fanboy.
Motorstorm online, Resistance online, Untold Kingdoms......I've never seen lag, it's joy.
On Xbox Live every game lags and it sickens me. Mechassault, Gears of War, Call of Duty, Doom 3, Ghost Recon, WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007 (omg, don't even get me started on this, get ps2 version instead! Actually get 2006 it's better, hehe)....they.....ALL....lag. I dunno if it's p2p that Live uses or something where only people close to your geopraphical location work well.
Xbox Live is, has been, and always will be overrated. Sure their interface and GUI are the best, but the online gameplay is horrendous, and to this day i'm still surprised more people don't say this than they do.

Never had an issue with lag on Live except with Prey. Connection is strong and fast. Not sure what's up with your connection BHvrd. I've been in a private chat with someone while playing people online and very rarely have so much of a hiccup. It could always be the other gamers connection too.
Send me a friend request (same as DP ID). We'll get some non-lag games going, or at least try and figure out the issues.
Developers can take servers off line too. With the exception of EA, all Live enabled games are still Live enabled.
Live lets you download movies, TV shows, etc. Live Arcade is huge, though PSN has some damn fine titles too, just not in the quantity department.
Accessing things like friends lists, messages, etc. is far easier on Live. Chatting with friends is flawless. Downloading is better with background downloading up to six items.
I also have never had any lag problems on xbl.
I've moved twice since I got Xbox live, and I've never had serious lag issues either in any place I played from. Only once in a blue moon. I'd say 95% of the time, my experience has been lag free. Mechassault, Halo 2, Unreal Championship 2, Street Fighter, you name it, they all play great.
I almost never have lag on XBL but I did all the friggin' time with PSN. I mean, I had a PS3 with a headset and tried to play Motorstorm and R6:Vegas over a couple month period but it was laggy and I ALWAYS, ALWAYS had problems hearing the other people. I gave up on it. I sold it and got a 360 and the difference was like night to day. I can now actually converse with people for once.
Maybe PSN can improve in the future but it cannot compete with XBL. You pay $50/year for live and it's worth it to me as someone that's had both.
I had a lag problem when I was on DSL lite. (256kb/s)
But now that I upgraded to the 6mb/s connection, my online (what little there have been, lately) experiences with XBL have been nothing short of flawless.
PS3/PC getting cross-platform play for Unreal Tornament 3.

The first "in what I see" in many cases where developers are going to get tired of Xbox Live's closed architecture.
Gamers want more, not to pay more for what should be considered user content. This is the big advantage I see PSN having. After all it is about community/games/content right?
XBL lag has nothing to do on MS's end. Its got everything to do with somone having a bad connection that bogs down everything else. I've had some good in-game lag (online play of course) with PREY (ZOMG Bad lag), Crackdown (Don't know who's fault that was mine or Hardcore's, it just wouldn't stop stuttering) and I had a bunch of matches that had some lag in the Halo 3 Beta (and that was player issues).
I've not used the PlayStation online system so I've got no clue as to its clunkyness, but if it follows suit to the PS2 stuff... it'll be clunky. XBL is pretty straight forward, i've got a few moments of frustration here and there where they hide some of the stuff, but overall its very very very good.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I currently have a 360 and PS3 and in terms of gameplay I've noticed no difference. No lag issues with either one that weren't caused by me having connection issues.
In terms of the online store, Live is far easier to browse and blows the PSN Store out of the water in terms of content. PSN seems to be picking it up a little lately with demos and such.
I do like that the PSN store uses $$ for transactions and not points. The point system to me seems to distract one from the fact that they're laying down $10 a pop for a couple of extra maps and other in-game content. At least with the PSN its more clear how much I'm being microtansactioned to death.
But in the end I only really care about playing games, and in that respect they are equal.
