Default Should I consider giving up modern games?

I was recently in an accident which severely broke my wrist, which will have to be in traction, then a cast, then require physical therapy to fully recover. Doctors are not sure my hand will ever be 100% again. As a 360 owner, however, I must say that if it truly is the best console on the market, this current console war is the lousiest in memory. I only really got it for GTA IV anyways, the games I have played have been almost universally disappointing on the system. Maybe I should just stick with classics that don't require a lot of buttons anyways. Thoughts?

I'd say there's no need to call them off entirely. Only play the things that interest you, like GTA IV. There has to be at least a couple others games out now or in the future that will make the machine more worthwhile to you.

Sure the console war is lousy, but times have changed and we'll never see another one as good as what happened in the early 90's. Personally, I could care less about the 'war' and am playing what I find to be enjoyable, regardless of system.

I think that, no matter what, you'll want to avoid games for a while until that wrist heals to the point of usability. Hopefully it was your right wrist; it's easy to adapt to playing NES games with a cast on your right hand, as long as your fingers are exposed. I did that for a while back in the late 80's myself.
RIP bargora, you will be greatly missed. That is how we do things on Giedion Prime.

You should try out PS3, I have a 360, PS3 and Wii and the only games that have given me Next Gen feeling are:

    1. MotorStorm
    2. Heavenly Sword
    3. LAIR

now someone might come in and say o shit those are all SONY games.. blah blah but let me explain

When I played MotorStorm I was amazed at the amount of Physics and how HUGE and Alive the Races Felt, there were things going on left and right which just made the game feel alive(however later on the Races got ridiculously hard)

Secondly LAIR Is just beautiful and HUGE, at the start when you mouth the dragon your dragon feels HUGE and then all of a sudden when you ride it you are a freakin fly in the screen with HUGE ASS dragons fly (the game gets frustrating so make sure if you pause to see ur next target, thats the most annoying thing about the game)

Lastly Heavenly Sword, the game has amazing animations and super amazing cut scenes which feels like you are watching a freakin movie. I play the demo like 3 times a day just to watch the opening cut scene..

so in the END only these games are giving me the NEXT GEN vibe with next gen presentation that I expect, alot of games that came out last year are just better graphics of the xbox or ps2 version of games, alot of people seem to Like Resistence but I hate that game, its all week colors...

I also Loved Gears of War untill it turned out a shotgun fest. THe single Player has same feeling.. HUGE Scale and sick presentation..

Pick up a DS. It's current gen and has the best variety of games out there, including lots of old-school style gaming.

I realized that there are a finite number of "classic games" and a even smaller # of those are ones I'd want to play. Either I adapt and discover newer games I like or I get passed by. I'm not going to like all the new stuff but I know it was the same way back in the 8-bit/16-bit era as well.

Classic, modern, 2D, 3D....all that matters is if its fun.

Possibility is infinity! You must be satisfied!

I hate to get all "mushy" on you, but in your heart you already know what to do. Follow your heart and you will be fine.

I wish you the best of luck with your recovery. I have a neurological disability, so I can somewhat relate. The difference is that video games are actually "good" for my condition.

Let us know how it turns out for you!

yeah honestly the DS is probably one of the best to go with. Anyway yeah this war is shit compared to the past but gaming in general isn't what it used to be. I've enjoyed my 360 though and with halo coming I should be busy till/through xmas. Guitar hero has been good to

    Default hmmm...

GTA did not lead to the accident did it?

You seem to type well enough -- PC Gaming maybe?

Anyways you can't go wrong with retrogaming but in that sense you can focus on Xbox Live Arcade or the same on the Wii. Reliving the oldies on the modern consoles can be a new experience.

Sounds like forcing yourself later to play modern games might be good rehabilitation for your wrist as well...

There might be some specialized controllers out there these days for 'handicapable' people that you could benefit from as well.

I type one handed for now. once the rods are removed from my wrist and lower arm, I will have to go to therapy to get flexibility back in my fingers so I can play, type, and make a fist, all of which are not currently possible, but it's still early. I have an old coin op (Mr. Do), which I can control fine with my left, but my right (broken) wrist makes throwing the ball too painful.

As for XBOX arcade oldies, I just couldn't play Dig Dug or Rush N' Attack with that style controller (even when I wasn't injured). So I guess I'll have to stick to one-handed MAME stuff for awhile.

GTA IV can wait, but hopefully I'll be able to play a little by the time it does come out.

Man, I hope your recovery goes well!

I had to have a huge cyst cut out of my right arm between the wrist and the elbow a couple years ago and had a bone graft with a piece of my hip bone. I couldn't play any of my consoles for a while because I couldn't hold a controller. I don't know if you play PC games, but what I did was get started playing Civ 2 again one-handed on the laptop. I had a really great time until I could play with a joystick again. And, there are tons of cheap PC games out there that's for sure.

    Good luck!

Methinks some classic games require just as much button manipulation as current consoles.

I say, keeping up with the latest technology is too expensive to be worthwhile. There was stuff that came out years ago that is still worth playing now, and by the time you're finished with that, anything out on current consoles that's worth playing will still be readily available, and probably more cheaply too.

Wow, I always thought this is a great current console war, and I am thirty, so I have seen all of them.

The only problem I have is that the best is yet to come!

Golden Bear, you might find some solice with a Wii. The games that don't require the nunchuck anyways. You shouldn't have any problem with them. Some DS games are simular in which you use the stylus for everything. That's all I can think of in terms of current consoles and such.

Game-Accessibility.com is going to be one of your favorite places to hang out and get the hot poop on what might work best for you now.

A guy that goes by the name of Baron Calamity that plays all sorts of stuff with just one hand. Pretty cool dude; a fairly easy way to get a hold of him is to just shoot him a message on shacknews.

It should be noted that he got in one of the nerdiest, geekiest fights of all time and has been my hero ever since.

The DS And wii should go nicely for you until you are recovered.

the best thing that you can do is to keep on playing as much as possible... when I broke my arm, I kept on playing as much as I could stand to, and my doctor said that's prolly why I was able to regain my full range of movement, and regain it very quickly at that... you wouldn't think that simple button mashing and stick jiggling would do as much as physical therapy would, but it does alot... even the smallest movements are still exercising the muscles and bones and helping you to recover... but you still need physical therapy too...
