Title says all. I don't want to collect/buy/spend money on versions of games that are done much better on the NES/SMS. Any info would be appreciated!

Robot, fight like a chicken!
Metal Gear for the MSX is the definitive version over the Famicom version.
None of the games that appear on both the SG-1000 & SMS are better on the SG-1000, though there's not a *massive* difference between the versions of Bank Panic, Champion/Great Soccer or Penguin Land.
super pitfall, where not better then the nes version, is almost totally a differnt game worth checking out.
I'd say most of Konami's games for the MSX1 are worth owning, even if the NES versions are better. They're different enough (or in the case of Parodius and Gradius 2 completely different) to warrant checking out.
For the SG-1000, the only games really worth getting for it are unique ones not available elsewhere. Girl's Garden is particularly good, so is Gulkave. Golgo 13 is decent, but it's a completely different game from the NES one and isn't as good.
There aren't very many good SG1000 games IMO, and none are better than the NES versions. Some good games worth owning for the SG are:
Galaga- missing bonus rounds but still fun to play.
Star Jacker- very similar to Astro Warrior for Master System with great music.
HERO- Not as good looking as some versions but still plays just as good.
MSX also has a Castlevania game ported to it.
If they made a movie out of your top five worst sins, what would it be rated?

As previous posters have stated, more often different than good.
Akumajo Dracula(Castlevania) was released a month apart from the Famicom version on MSX2, while they look similar they are different to play.
On MSX2 the game has large levels resembling the stages in the Famicom version you can explore, finding keys and different weapons. The gameplay is far less polished, as is the control. Overall a bit frustrating.
MSX has the real Metal Gear 2 (which I think is available as an unlockable bonus on one of the PS2 Metal Gear Solid games).
A few games I've always wanted to try but scared of the cost:
SG1000:
Chack 'n' Pop ~ a Taito game that looks like Bubble Bobble
Champion Pro Wrestling ~ I love older Wrestling Games (NES Pro Wrestling comes to mind.)
Choplifter ~ I love the Choplifter games as well. Would like to know how this is.
Drol ~ I *LOVED* this on the Apple //E. So the thought of a console version is tantelizing.
Elevator Action ~ NES probably has the best port, but still would like to see what it's like.
Lode Runner ~ (IMO) the graphics looks better than the NES version, just don't know how it will play.
Zaxxon ~ I love Zaxxon and would like to see just how close this is to the Colecoversion.
MSX:
Bubble Bobble
Chack'n' Pop
Pooyan
R-Type
Thexder + Firehawk (Thexder 2) ~ I loved playing these since the days of the Tandy 1000. It probably looks average to a lot of people but I always ate it up.
Robot, fight like a chicken!
95% of the SG-1000 library is really ugly graphics-wise, and really inferior to versions of those games on other consoles. There are a couple of games that look good enough to be an NES game, but just a couple. Gulkave is one of them. Gulkave isn't a particularly great game, but it at least looks pretty for a game on that system.
One game that does look equal in graphics to its sequel on the NES is The Castle, a prequel to Castlequest. Although, being equal isn't necessarily a good thing, because Castlequest is quite a hated NES game.
Maybe I'll take some screenshots to show you how ugly some of these games are. Bombjack, Elevator Action, Lode Runner, Wonderboy, etc, all those games everyone recognizes, you'll think look ugly.
Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake.
The game cartridge use one of those Konami custom sound chips (SCC). Also Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake are official games and only works on MSX 2 and up.The ones equipped with Yamaha Video chips. Their are hard covered boxes too ...
There is a version of Gulkave for MSX1 too ...
The Castle is one of those computer games that have versions for various computers. The MSX1 have two Castle games The Castle and The Castle Excellent .
The library of titles for the SEGA machines is very much limited, a similar approach could be done when searching dedicated titles for the Nintendo platform ... After all there is/was only some hundred's titles available for those 8-bit formats. The MSX/MSX2 in the other hand has thousand's available. The titles for MSX2+ and MSX Turbo R are equally spares like the ones for SG-1000.
