The industry will not crash. The closest thing that could happen is if in the distant future one of the big 3 is forced out by a new system/company. More likely, publishers/game studios will fold as they release complete shit titles and dig themselves into holes.
In other words. On this version of the Oregon Trail, sponsored by the good folks at Game Stop, you have died of “It calm the beef min”, aka dysentery.

the "crash" only lasted, what, 2, maybe 3 years TOPS anyway.
Not that we're anywhere close to another - but even IF it did, enthusiasts like us would have PLENTY to do with our collecting habits, conventions, meetings, existing online games, portables, and internet forums to keep us busy until the next hypothetical "crash" let to the next industry "re-birth".
"And the book says: 'We may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us.'"
I'd suspect that the creditability of these GS employees is on the same level of the half-retarded kid that followed me around Best Buy yesterday, babbling about how the "PS3 that Wal-Mart sells has rumble in it" and how "I played it and I know" and "Everyone is going to buy MGS4gunsofthepatriotswhenitcomesoutohmygodilovetha tgameitsmyfavoriteeventhoughitsnotoutyet"
Or something to that effect. So no crash, no worries.
The first crash was because there were too many companies trying to cash in quick, and the industry outgrew itself too quickly. Now, small companies that release crap are going to get driven out of business or gobbled up by a larger conglomerate.
If the game industry crashes we've got bigger issues, like the entire economy is going thermonuclear. We won't give 2 shits about it going down if thats the case.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I was at a Best Buy a little after x-mas this year and was talking to one of my friends about how I felt that the PS3 didn't have any major titles this x-mas (unless you include Drake's Fortune and whatnot) so the kid comes over and says "you know why that is?" and starts to talk about how Sony hasn't put money into research a development in thier software and how PS3 is already dead. He then tried selling us on a 360. My friend was like "wow I can't believe all that stuff he told us." I then had to tell him he probably told us that stuff because he has a 360 and is anti sony. They will sometimes make shit up or come up with figures that aren't quite true. If that shit was true about PS3, I'm sure we would have all heard about it by now. You always gotta take what some (not all) retail employees tell you with a grain of salt because they really don't always know what they are talking about. I've also heard PSP is dead already....uhhhh yeah ok. If whenever you hear interesting "facts" at a retail store, do the extra research about said subject online. A lot of times you may find out that everything was just a bunch of smoke being blown up your ass.
Research = your best friend.
