Is there an upconverter specifically made for the Wii? Google isn't pulling anything up. I have a friend who would like to get a hold of one. (I don't know why...it seems to look fine on an HDTV.) Anybody think it's worth upconverting at all?

480p it think is the best resolution its gonna get... fi this is what your asking?
They're are plenty of upconverters out there. You don't need one specific to the Wii.
Here's an article on them here and what to look for:

And believe me, with the Wii playing a TV with a high native res, it does look junky. This is one of the main reasons I'm in the market for an upscaler myself.

Well I just bought some cheapo $6 wii Component cables off of Monoprice.com. It definitely looks nicer than the composite ones. It aint gonna get much nicer than that is my thinking, so I'm satisfied with the 480p output. Cheap. Nicer picture. I'll just stick to that.
480p from the Wii upscaled to 720p or 1080p will look nice on a 50" and larger screen. Like a good 480p Dvd upscaled to 1080p. Less blur and sharper detail.
But the cheap upscalers won't help much , and the better expensive ones are...well ...expensive.
I don't know if it's something I'm doing wrong, or my hdtv (46" 1080p LCD HDTV) but most games on the wii look absolutely horrible. I have the component cables, but they sometimes make things look worse. Most notable, Res Ev. 4 Wii edition looks like I'm playing through a window screen that someone through mud on. Looks a tad better than Sega CD fmv.
yep. Makes not a difference.
Not all hdtv's handle 480i or 480p signals equally. Its likely that the scaler in your tv just sucks and if your not feeding the tv its native resolution, its going to look ugly due to the scaler. In which case, a upconverter like being discussed in this thread would probably help you out since you could upscale the 480p signal with a decent scaler, and feed the tv its native res.
Are there Wii games that don't even support progressive scan?

There are still 480i only and/or 4:3 only Wii titles.
if you use an upscaler, is there a danger of producing controller lag? on a movie lag doesn't matter, but my experience with my friend's PS3 upscaling PS2 games... while producing a beautiful picture, the gaming experience itself was mildly frustrating.
It depends on what kind of TV you have and also, most good upscalers have a "Game" mode that will reduce the amount of processing time for a trade-off between quality and response time.if you use an upscaler, is there a danger of producing controller lag? on a movie lag doesn't matter, but my experience with my friend's PS3 upscaling PS2 games... while producing a beautiful picture, the gaming experience itself was mildly frustrating.
I am running a DVDO iScan VP30 into an older Toshiba 56" CRT HDTV. I don't ever use the game mode and I have had zero problems with response time. All of my classic systems and the Wii look fantastic in 1080i and I also have zero overscan (you can adjust the picture through the scaler however you like).
Hi,
Here you can find pictures of a Wii connected to a upscaler: http://forums.lovingwii.com/latest-n...wii-1080p.html
A VGA box is a cheaper approximation to a upscaler, some models are:
http://www.x2vga.com/ and http://www.vdigi.com/
I tested a Wii with composite cable, component cable, and a VGA box.
Here you can see the results (the page is in spanish): http://www.wiichile.com/forowii/viewtopic.php?t=2356
Hope this helps
Best regards

Is there some way to find out what's what, without trial and error? There's no indicator on the packaging like there was on Gamecube.
I'd like to connect my Wii to my monitor someday, but I'd rather not have to find out "the hard way" that like half my games won't work. Then again, there's still no official VGA, DVI, HDMI, etc. hookup, so I'm not sure how I would do that anyway.

I'd probably say around 200 lbs. I have a 46 inch and that weighs in at around 175. It's a real nice "paperweight" sitting in a closet :bA 56 inch CRT??? My god man, what does that thing weigh?
There's very incomplete list at AVS (The initial post is useless since it hasn't been updated since 2006, but the thread has useful info), and HDTVArcade (Doesn't appear to have been updated since 2006 as well).

I've never seen any other list.
Edit - Here is a list with even more information than those.
