Default Saturn and PSX 3DO Ports. Any differences?

Crystal Dynamics ported many of their original 3DO games to the Saturn and PSX. Gex, Slam n Jam (With Magic and Kareem on the ports), Total Eclipse (PSX Only), The Horde, and a few others I might be missing.

Are there any differences between the 3DO versions, and the Saturn/PSX version? Any boost in resolution? Loading times? Extra content? Not just Crystal Dynamics, but pretty much any 3DO game that was ported to the Saturn or PSX.

Well, it's been forever, but memory tells me that Total Eclipse and Gex were just as horrible and worthless on the PS1 as they were on the 3DO.

Need For Speed became a different flavor of game. The speed vastly increased. Tunes were added. The intermission clips went away (most people hated the geeky racer guy). I suppose it became a much better game. However, I kind of got a kick out of the geeky racer rival, and I liked the slow sunday drive sort of feel of the 3DO version.

I think Shockwave included the expansion disc in it's PS1 appearrance. I've never played the PS1 version, so I'm not sure. I think Return Fire on the PS1 also includes the 3DO expansion material too.

Space Hulk allegedly had a better framerate on the PS1 than the 3DO.

The Horde was identical, I believe. I think I rented that one to see if it was any different from the 3DO version I already had, and it wasn't.

Road Rash is surprisingly the same as the 3DO version. It's an equally great game regardless of which version you choose.

Was Shockwave available on Saturn? I'm gonna go check the Online Guide.

Total Eclipse was on the Saturn. The Playstation version was called Total Eclipse Turbo.

I believe Turbo was almost a direct port of the 3DO version albiet upgraded a bit. It didn't garner much acclaim when released but the Saturn version did.

The Saturn version is the only one I have played but from what I can tell it is a whole new game. Much like the later Wing Commanders, it's storyline is told between levels with some of the best live action FMV scenes I have seen in a game. The fact that they got Claudia Christian from Babylon 5 fame to help out didn't hurt either. The Saturn version also has a TON (like 9 or 10) secret levels where the designers just "had fun" and parodied EVERYTHING!!! There are references to Starwars, The band Tool, and even a level where you just gun down as many cows as you can.

The Saturn version is just classic...

Yeah, you're talking about Solar Eclipse. I just recently got Solar Eclipse, and am loving it. I always thought it was a sequel or something along those lines. Yeah, I love the FMV as well.

No, wait, Solar Eclipse was actually the follow-up to Toal Eclipse..Obviously, by the time Solar Eclipse was release, it was only released on the Saturn and PSX......

I think that the 3DO version of Starfighter is better than either the Saturn or PS1 port.

Total Eclipse Turbo on the PSX ran slightly smoother than its 3DO predecessor, and the long brown "tunnels" that you flew through to hide the load time were greatly reduced. Also, it's odd that they chose to add this one little "improvement", but if you look closely at the blue water in the first stage of Total Eclipse Turbo on the PSX, there are waves on its surface, while the water in the 3DO version is static.

Also, Off Road Interceptor became Off-Road Interceptor Extreme on the PSX, and the frame rate improved slightly as well.

Road Rash isn't very good on the Saturn. It has some kind of collision detection wonkiness that makes it so an attack won't actually land unless you're exactly parallel with the other racer. In other words, the collision detection behaves as if the racers were as paper-thin as they look.

Creature Shock has lots of improvements.

Yeah, if I recall correctly, the 3DO version of it actually saves to the console's memory, instead of using passwords like the other versions. Also, I believe the 3DO version has an extra world as well.

short of going through Mobygames and manually compiling a list myself, does anyone know of a list of 3do games that were ported to PC (or ported from PC to 3do) and the differences between them? I'd be interested in how Gex compared, for instance.

...also, I've got the sudden urge to fire up some Vengeance of the Blood Angels, but it's just not as much fun when it's not networked (plus it pales in comparison to the first game)

Dunno how Slam N Jam turned out on PSX but for a good while there I really loved the Saturn version (from about 2002 to 2004). Many a cutthroat games were waged against my bro. It didn't have the best gameplay, but by far it was the closest thing to Konami's classic Run N Gun on the Saturn as you were going to get.
