Do you know what is the meaning and point of archives? It's absolutely normal that they'd be read-only for all but the mods.
I think cause its the best of old topics so a new post would not count as a really good worth while post to keep????

Archives can't be POSTED, they're moved there.
Archives can't be EDITED (although you're free to add your own commentary to an existing thread) because most of the threads there are tied into the Digital Press website and allowing users to edit or delete topics could compromise the site's integrity.
