A question for a Neo Geo expert....

Yeah, I would like to ask a New Geo expert a question. I had a Neo - Geo way back in the day, the one that used those huge double VHS sized $200.00 carts. But I only had it for a very short period of time. After that, I basically lost all track of the Neo Geo. The question that I have, is what are the various versions of the Neo - Geo. What was the type that I had? What is the difference between it, and the CD version. Are all the carts also available on the CD version?

Are all of these systems super, super expensive? Which one should I try to get, if I was able to get one? Also, do you know if the Neo Geo has RGB output capabilites?

MVS (arcade), AES, CD, and CDZ (faster-loading CD)

A Neo Geo AES.

Yours is more expensive, but it has no load times (the Neo CD load times are infamously LONG)

Nope. KoF on the CD stopped at '99. Metal Slug stopped at 2. No Mark of the Wolves, Last Blade 2, Super Dodge Ball, SvC Chaos, etc.

Are all of these systems super, super expensive?

The SYSTEMS are, but the games are only expensive for the AES. And some ultra-rare games on the other formats too. (MVS games that weren't released on AES, Breakers and Metal Slug 2 for the CD...)

Which one should I try to get?

Depends. CDZ if you're on a budget. MVS if you want the best and have a lot of space. AES otherwise.

Do you know if the Neo Geo has RGB output capabilities?

I'm pretty sure it does.

The most valuable carts on the neo geo AES from my understanding are Kizuna Encounter(euro version), and Metal Slug 1.

$200-ish. (I know someone is gonna say "I got mine for $XXX" but $200 seems to be a fair average.)

Dunno specifically, but it's fairly common as far as Neo goes. I'd imagine in the sub $50 range.

Everything these fools have said is good info.

Euro Ultimate 11 and Euro Kizuna are the 2 rarest carts.

You can get them on MVS way cheaper, plus certain games weren't released on homecart like Neo Turfmasters, and Neo Drift Out.

Which is why I recommend going the MVS route if you are getting into Neo Geo for the games, not the collecting aspect. Although MVS can be collectable as well, since you can get full kits, which are nice to have especially if you have a cab, but not necessary at all.

Hell yes NEO GEO! I just got Sonic Wings 3...oh yeah baby, shmup goodness! I will definitely be getting SVC Chaos on AES if its released, I'm setting back a fund just for that game.

So is the CDZ the cheapest then? Cheaper than regular CD as well? I know I heard some CDZ's have trouble with the cd drive but would that really cause the $ to drop?

Naah, the regular CD is cheaper than the CDZ. The CDZ has a double spin drive, where as the the regular has a single spin. What he meant by on a budget is the games are cheaper, though since getting into MVS, I'd take issue with that. I've picked up a lot of good games on MVS for around $10 each. Just gotta watch eBay.

I really think the best, cheapest route to go is to find someone on the Neo Geo board to build you a MVS Supergun and go that route. Yeah, the hardware is a little more costly, but you can play all the games (well, except the handfull of CD only ones) and you don't have to deal with load times. Prices for the common MVS carts are in line with the CD prices.

A supergun is an attachment that allows you to connect an arcade PCB to a regular TV. There's a guy on the Neo-geo message board (name escapes me right now) who modifies MVS boards so they'll hook straight up to a tv. It wouldn't be hard to do if you're handy with a soidering gun and didn't mind doing some digging to get the info you'd need to do it.
