Warning, it's a bit crass, some language, but gets funny around 1:00 in.
Entertaining until the N bomb was dropped.... then I stopped listening.

Anyway, NES version "feels" better to me.

I am the OP and I have been extensively playing the NES and Genny versions the last few days. After further review, I still cannot determine which one is better. The NES version does have 'tighter' control, but the Genesis version is lot more forgiving. The only reason I might take the Genensis version over the NES one is because my Genesis is modified for component video and s-video and my NES is not. Sounds like something former member Anthony1 would say...

I am definitely more of a fan of the NES version. Just because of how it pushed the system unlike the Genesis re-hash. Don't get me wrong, the Genesis one was good, and I do like the Genesis controller better, but NES was it.

First post . . . and it needed to be about battletoads.

I always felt the NES version was slightly more playable somehow, i really dont like square joypads though so i'd still say Sega.

I don't think Battletoads really pushed the NES as much as you people are saying. I mean it doesn't look bad or anything, but it's not terribly impressive. Now, Battletoads Double Dragon, that was impressive for NES.

They play exactly the same, it's just a matter of graphics. Maybe sound comes into play, although I'm not sure on that one.

Yeah, I played the Genny version for probably a solid year (maybe even two, and that was several years after many NES version rentals as well) before I was able to beat the game. Endless amounts of frustration on the stupid rotating tower, the damned elevator shaft (level 8), and I FINALLY beat the stupid bitty at the end...

    *SPOILER ALERT*

...and was given one of the worst, low-blow, unrewarding endings I have ever seen in a video game. I have never played it since. Literally, a one-screen, 5-second ending. I was more peeved then, than I had been in the entirety of playing the game over the previous 6 or so years.
Same goes for the ending for the impossible TMNT 1 for NES. At least then I used emulators so there was less time wasted. Ugh.

Heh. I may be incredibly weird, but I kind of like it when really hard games end with a "Congratulations!" screen.

I know I am bumping the oldest thread of all time here, but I couldn't let this go. I joined these boards just so I could post this.

This statement could not be further from the truth.

I've been on a huge Genesis/Sega CD kick these past couple of months, and it finally led me to try out Genesis Battletoads. While the graphics are colorful and pleasing, the game plays completely different from the NES versions. All your actions are floatier; they feel slippery and disconnected from the player. When a finishing move is activated like the Kiss My Fist, Big Bad Boot or Nuclear Knuckles they don't feel anywhere near as satisfying. The toads' momentum is off, the sound and graphic effects are weaker, and the enemies lazily glide off-screen. Running, jumping... movement in general just feels off. I could also go on and on with many smaller details that are different (and quite frankly lacking) but there's no need. To summarize: feels bad, man.

Yes, you do get a prettier game (despite some questionable artistic changes). You get an easier game, but mainly because it feels like you're constantly wading through a medium considerably thicker than air. Unfortunately I've yet to play Ragnarok's World on the GB, but barring that the NES version is far and away the best of these two. NES Battletoads might be very demanding but it has the tight controls to back it up. Most importantly, landing hits is extremely satisfying.

Both the Genesis and NES versions are pretty good, and I'd find it hard to choose between the two.

Stay away from the gamegear version, though. Even though it looks better than both, the controls are sluggish and beyond broken, and you move forward a lot every time you punch, making it hard to combo.

    "Masochistic" is probably more accurate.

I'm horrible, but I say get all three versions. I have the NES and Genesis version and the SNES version is on the wanted list. If I were going to say which one to get first, I would say the NES version.
    Atari: 2600, Jaguar
    Microsoft: XBox, XBox 360
Nintendo: NES, GB, GBC, SNES, N64, GameCube, GBA SP, Wii, New 3DS, Wii U
Sega: SMS, Genesis, Game Gear, Nomad, Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast
    Sony: PS1, PS2, PS3
    Wanted: 7800, Neo Geo CD

Are you referring to Battlemaniacs? That's a completely different game. Weird button swapping aside, it's great.

    Crap!

No, I was actually going for the other one, Battletoads vs. Double Dragon. Probably because of the other thread recently, and I failed to read the title. Disregard my post as I only know the NES version, though the Genesis version is also on my wanted list.
