Commodore 64 video cable problem

I just got a refurbished in box commodore 64 at goodwill. It brought only the rf switch and since i have a commodore monitor i needed the video cable. I bought the cable new from ebay and hooked it up to my monitor and i got the video but no color. The cable has the yellow and white connectors. Is this the cable or the computer?

You have the wrong cable. It is probably internally running video from pin 1 (lum) which will only tap in to a b/w pic on the C64. Is your C64 monitor port 5pin or 8pin? There are many cables specifically for the C64 on ebay, and I only found this info due to the fact that I freakin' purchased the wrong cable and had the same b/w output...argh!

If it's a 1701 or 1702 monitor, you need to be plugged into the front inputs (and make sure the switch in the back is in the correct position). If you're already doing that, then yes you probably have the wrong cable. No color is a fairly uncommon problem on the 64, but not unheard of.

This is quite true - there is also a switch on the back of a bunch of Commodore monitors that rectify this or a different video port to plugin for this situation. I have both 2 and 3 pin hookups in the back of my 1084s.

its a 1701. I checked the switch and stuff. Is there a cable you know about specifically? If so can you please send me a link for it

If the cord has three rca plugs, then two of them are video.
If you don't get color, you probably only have the luminance channel connected.

It only has 2 the yellow video and white audio no red cable.

Many companies in the early days, used the "monitor cable" terminology to describe the A/V cables.....Even the Official Sega Genesis model 1, 5 pin din A/V is described as "monitor cable" in the packaging....I still have 2 or 3 brand new boxed Genesis A/V cables (or, monitor cables) laying around....

On the subject of the video cable, is it possible to get s-video out of the C64? I have one of those AV cables that has the extra plugs. Is there some kind of Y-adapter that can combine those Luma and Chroma RCA jacks to an s-video plug? Or do I have no clue what I'm talking about?

I tried it on my tv and got the same crappy B & W image. Ive ordered cables from this store before and he says it works in color! Click Here

If possible, test the output thru the r/f modulator. If there's still no color it's probably the computer, but if you do get color thru the modulator but not the monitor port then it's most likely a problem with the video cable (or possibly the port connector in the computer, but this seems unlikely).

The signals are similar but the voltage levels are wrong.

My tv sadly does not have the uhf vhf connectors. I already clarified it with an friend who had the same problem as I had and that this cable worked for him

I built an s-video cable for my c64 and the picture is just beautiful. I just did a straight connection of the luma and chroma pins from the c64 to the respective pins on the s-video plug. ive had it for the last 5 years and had no worries thus far

Conversely, I have a female s-video -> 2x male RCA adapter & have used many s-video devices with the chroma/luma inputs on my 1701 / 1702 monitors. Picture is always spot-on.
