Playstation 2 Issues

I've got a friend with a slim PS2 that seems to be having some weird issues.

She puts in her games(God of War, Vice City) and the games won't work. No scratches or damage to them whatsoever. She puts in her boyfriend's game(Frogger) which is scratched, and everything works just fine. I tried to figure it out on my own, but I think I had a small aneurysm. lol.

Could be a badly pressed disc. I have an Amplitude disc with the same issue. Has she tried them on another PS2?

God of war is double layered, and depending on what version of gta that is, it may be too. If that's the case then both being D-layered and not playing may be something.

What color is the bottom of the frogger disc? If it's blue chances are the ps2 laser is on the way out.

A lot of early PS2 systems were never calabrated to read dual layer discs.

Did a search and found this thread. My ps2 slim seems to run fine on a few games I have had the time to try to play for a sustained period. Then I hit Madden 2008 and I get a freeze at random points, sometimes a few games in, sometimes in setup. I don't have a second ps2 to try the game on. I am ticked because it is actually a gift for my daughter and now I am sorry I got it, because I could get a new one but don't want to give her this if it is going to break down at any time. kind of kills the fun of playing.

To preserve the laser on my PS2 I got a network adapter, installed Free McBoot, and now run most of my games off of a hard drive. Any games that aren't compatible I run off discs, but it's a rare few that need to be run off of discs in my collection.

However, I have a fat and a slim at my disposal and the network adapter thing only works with a fat, unless you mod the slim.

I'm pretty sure they still sell replacement lasers on online shops. Replacing one isn't that hard and if you're worried about a warranty, the system is (surprisingly) almost a decade old. I don't think the warranty even applies anymore.
