The only reason Y2K wasn't a big deal was because of all the time and money spent on patching the really dangerous bugs.

Y2K could have been very bad, I assure you.
When I first heard of Y2K it was by someone giving a speech in my college speech class arround 1998. Since I was studying computer engineering I thought it was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard of. Then when it was all over the media I thought it was even stupider. They'd ask 'experts' "what if it happens" type questions. The only problem would be that they'd ask finacial and economics experts(and people selling books on Y2K), not computer experts "will it happen" type questions. They all thought hardly anything would happen. Guess who was right! I still think it's stuipd.

I did have a joke back then though that the reason George Lucas was rushing to get the new Star Wars movie out before 2000 was becasue if he didn't, the Y2K bug would cause the whole movie to be shown as one big green screen.

The Y2K was good Sci Fi but I failed to believe that the whole world would become stupid after Y2K hit. Like why couldn't we just build some new stuff in the TWO YEARS they were hyping it up. What was most upsetting about that whole thins was when all these religious groups started trying to profit from it. Still makes me want to punch religion in the face.

Lol Y2K, what a joke! I remember hearing about it as a kid in 98 or 99 and being a little freaked out, but my dad who was a computer whiz assured me that it wouldn't happen and that it was all a big hoax. I remember my dad going to relatives houses and parties with people being freaked out by Y2K and him explaining that it was false and that it wouldn't do anything. Guess who was right?

Look, I work in the software industry, and my company spent a lot of money making sure that Y2K wasn't a big deal. We made hospital software. But there was more critical software out there, and it received similar attention. It wasn't a hoax. Were some people OVERLY paranoid? Yes. Would nothing have gone wrong? Not a chance. Things DID go wrong, but due to the effort taken by many, many programmers, the problems were quite minimal. Yay.

I wasnt saying anything about it being a farce and that preventitive action is unecassary originally, its just that all the news networks made it out to seem like it would end the world no matter what action was taken.
"While no globally significant computer failures occurred when the clocks rolled over into 2000, preparation for the Y2K bug had a significant effect on the computer industry. Countries that spent very little on tackling the Y2K bug (including Italy and South Korea) experienced as few problems as those that spent much more (such as the United Kingdom and the United States), causing some to question whether the absence of computer failures was the result of the preparation undertaken or whether the significance of the problem had been overstated" F/wikipedia, with citation.

Funny thing is that people starting discussing and meeting over this problem in the 1980s and they had yet to deal with it, in their words, sufficiently, up until the new millenium.

The only problem I (well, my dad) had that was Y2K related was this piece of software he used to track car repairs. After 1999 it rolled back to 1900.

I told him that he could do the same thing via Excel, but he never did.

Possibility is infinity! You must be satisfied!

In Chrono Trigger, Lavos emerges from under ground and destroys the world in 1999.

I guess Boston should prepare to become a nuclear wasteland next year if SimCity for the SNES is accurate.
