For me it'd be GTA2, it just didn't live up to the mayhem that ws GTA1. Tbh it's also kinda how I feel about GTA4 compared to San Andreas.

And all the Yoshi's Island hate? Seriously?

I don't seem to remember people hating SMB2 back in the day as much as people like to remmeber they did. Sure we all knew it was different but for the most part it seemed that people liked it. I mean, it's one of the best selling NES games(third I believe). If everyone did hate it so much back then I doubt that would be the case.

It wasn't untill after SMB3 that people felt it was the weaker of the bunch. And it wasn't untill more recenlty when people learned the story behind it that it didn't feel like a "real" mario game anymore.

But to answer the question, I was more disapointed in Zelda II.

I absolutely loved Carmageddon on my Mac. Played the hell out of it, got a bunch of patches and hacks for it, retextured my cars, etc. Carmageddon II came out, I picked it up immediately, and didn't like it. No matter the speed of your machine or how powerful your graphic card was it played choppy, they added a bunch of missions to the game rather than just letting you race (the point of the game), and just bogged the game down with crap. Sure, the graphics engine was improved, but the structure of the game was trashed when they moved away from the racing aspect.

I can tell you that every teenager during christmas 1988 had a huge hard-on for Mario 2 and Zelda 2. They were almost impossible to find and the demand was huge. I remember my local news station running a story on these games.

Any hate now is likely from someone who wasn't into the NES at that time or maybe just retconning their memory.

The probably dislike it more because I never really had the chance to play it when it first came out and appreciate it in the context of it being the only other major Mario platformer. I wasnt even born yet.

I get really tired of people saying that no one who played Zelda II back in the day hated it. I had plenty of friends back then who loathed the game with a passion. I didn't get an NES until later, but I can tell you right now that turning Zelda into a side scroller was a huge mistake. Glad some people got some enjoyment out of it, but I don't even consider it to be Zelda, and I know there was a pretty large backlash against it back in the day.

At any rate, my vote goes to Alundra 2. All the things that made the original good were gone and what you were left with was an ugly ugly game full of forced humor and stupid, ridiculous set-ups. It's like someone decided to make a B-movie for the sequel or something.

I adore Zelda 2 and always have - it was a wicked adventure/platformer with fluid controls and Zelda exploration goodness.

I'm going to have to post my original "2" disappointment though - the first that came to mind when I saw the title of this thread.

    Die Hard 2.

I also enjoy Zelda 2. I enjoyed the challenge back then and I still play through it at least once a year. The departure worked for me in this case, but I'm glad they didn't do it again.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Final Fantasy II. By II I mean the original Japanese II, or the one on Dawn of Souls, Anniversary Edition, you get the point. I'm playing through it right now after finishing I and it is kinda painful. The leveling/skill system is inconsistent and broken (I do get it and I understand the logic, but that doesn't mean I have to like it), the map is annoying to navigate, the monsters/dungeons are harder than the bosses and I can't go what seems like more than 5 steps without a random encounter. I've put some time into this one and right now it's just a personal vendetta I have against this game. I will finish it, but I will NEVER do it again.

Oh! Bubble Bobble Part 2. Horrible horrible NES game. It's not even 2 player simultaneous! The biggest piece of garbage I'd ever seen... I was SHOCKED at how bad it was when I tried it recently.

My picks go out to Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2. Just thought both were some of the worst games in their respective series.

I enjoyed SMW 2 alot. I do NOT consider it a Mario game though, rather just Yoshi's Island. Though I would have to say that Yoshi's Story 64 (Yoshi's Island 2) was complete shit.

It always amazes me how much people pay for this shitty COMMON game. When there are 10 copies on ebay weekly why the hell would anyone pay $100 for one? Most overhyped game on the NES by far.

I agree with that 100%. The story was cryptic and made little sense. To many characters to play as, almost all with no personality outside of a 1 sentence intro speach when they joined. Little in common with the original game. All in all, it seemed to have been desighned as showcase of PSX graghics and sound over gameplay...The graghics even today are still good and the music is excellent. Cant say the same about the gameplay though.

I believe this sequel is what killed the series, despite there being a few fanboys of it [chrono cross].

Paper mario isnt as good as Mario RPG but its not terrible. Its worth playing if you havnt yet, its probably one of the better RPGs released since it came out [RPG quality has shot down since the SNES era imo]. Also the Gamecube release is better than Mario RPG by a tad and has alot of replay to it with a Arena. All 3 are great games and I played them to death...the WII release however sucks and killed the series [imo].

Mega Man 2 (gameboy version)...hehe. The soundtrack was so horrible to me, and the game was waaay too easy.

When I first read the title of this thread, I knew that for NES, the choice picks that everyone seems to complain about are Zelda 2, Castlevania 2 and Mario 2. I really loved Castlevania 2 back in the day, and still like it. Mario 2 I liked, did not like when I discovered the truth, and then came into an opinion that the game was okay, although more difficult than Mario 1 and 3, but not as good. However, I have been playing the game a lot recently, and rediscovered how fun the game is. Looking at it from a marketing standpoint, if the game was released in America as Doki Doki Panic (or however you want to translate that), it probably would not have sold many copies. Nintendo felt the game was worthy of a stateside release, make it Mario 2, and all of a sudden lots of people are playing the game and enjoying it. In the end, I'm glad that I got to play the game, good stuff.

As for Zelda 2, it is another NES game which receives so much hate. I only played both of the NES Zelda games probably around 1998/9 for the first time, never had them back in the day. I enjoyed them both a lot, and although I found the second Zelda a bit difficult at spots, still feel that it is a solid game.

As a few others have mentioned regarding SMW 2, I enjoy it, but do not consider it a true sequel to SMW. As great as SMW was, I might have preffered a true sequel as opposed to SMW 2, but the game as an independent is still fun.

There aren't that many sequels that have really let me down. Most sequels I enjoy. Super C and Mario Kart 64 disappointed me the most, but those don't have "2" in the title.

Here are a few titles that let me down:

God of War 2: The gameplay was there, the story didn't interest me. I mainly just screwed around and zoned out through a story I didn't care for.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Same as God of War 2. Playing the game wasn't bad, but the characters and story weren't very interesting. Plus, it seemed like there was a lack of boss battles compared to 1 and 3. Metal Gear Solid games are all about bosses for me.

RPG Maker II: I really enjoyed making screwy games for the first RPG Maker. There seemed to be less options and less screwy enemies and characters in the second one, thus I could never make an "Angry Donkey and the Legend of the Barnyard Warlock" sequel game for the sequel.

Kid Icarus 2: Disappoints me by not existing. Maybe I should have made that with RPG Maker II.

Those are the only ones that really stand out. I've suffered other small letdowns, but nothing major. I've also suffered some bigger let downs on sequels past 2.

I didn't own any consoles during a large part of the Playstation/Saturn/N64 era so that might have saved me from a few disappointments. Also, I never had a Genesis as a kid. Growing up a little poor and not buying a lot of sequels probably helped me not be upset at bad sequels.

Personally I would say Alundra 2 for the PS1. I was so disapointed because I loved Alundra 1 and their cut scenes, puzzles, etc etc....then I got this one and I was like......ok....this sucks....

Actually Kid Icarus 2 does exist for Game Boy, although it doesn't have "2" in the title.

Super Mario Bros. 2 - It was a ok game but nothing compared to the original. It's the odd one out in the Super Mario series.

Zelda 2 also isn't as good, same reason as Super Mario Bros. 2
