I've been out of town for a few days, so I decided the best way to spend a rainy crappy day is inside thrift and game stores. Here's what I found: (sorry about the picture but my POS camera is dying and somehow it's on a setting to take black/white/and green images.)

    Terminator Salvation - $12.48

    Goodwill:
Eternal Eyes (PSX) complete - $1.50
Jet Moto (PSX) complete - $1.50
Sonic CD (x2) disc only - $.50 each

    Thrift Store:
Fast Times at Ridgemont High cassette - $.25
Warrant Cherry Pie cassette - $.25
    Sega gray/blue Saturn controller - $1.21 (untested)

    Play N Trade:
    Centipede (DC) - $4.99
    The Grinch (DC) - $4.99
X-Men Mutant Academy (GBC) complete - FREE

Does anyone know anything about these Sonic CD's? They have no writing on them and I put one in my computer but I'm not sure I want to run it, as it comes up with a 1995 date. Is this the PC version of the original Sonic? I was able to see a JPEG of the start screen from sonic 1 on the disc.

    Thanks

I'm 95% sure that that's the "Dino" version of the game.

There's two versions of Sonic CD out there. The more common DirectX version that Sega released (and which would later be sold by Expert Software in budget versions), but there's an earlier version which does not use DirectX, instead it uses something called "Dino". Wikipedia sez:

While the DirectX version of Sonic CD for PC is the most common and the best-selling initial commercial game for Windows 95, it is not the first version of Sonic CD for PC. The original version of Sonic CD for PC was powered using Dino libraries, an Intel-developed precursor to DirectX. This version of Sonic CD was never individually sold at retail, it was only sold with Packard Bell computers as a pre-installed game, and sold as double-packs along with other PC Sonic games. Upon the release of DirectX 3, Sega ported the Dino dependencies to DirectX calls and released Sonic CD in its DirectX form.

    SNES are all $7.99
    PS1 and Genny are $6.99

However, there are times when the same store has every thing for $1.99 or $2.99, but not often.

I hardly buy from VV anymore. The last gaming thing I bought was a bare NES for $5 (for some reasons they price systems less than the games) and 2 2600 games for $1.99. Anything NES or above is too outrageously priced

Thanks Kitsune. That could very well be, as there are a lot of small items written on the edge of the disc, like "Sonic CD", "Sega CD", "Sonic logo TM Sega Inc." but nothing concerning a platform, requirements, or anything else. It does mention something about "Q Sound" but I don't know what that is.

After doing some Wiki research on "QSound", it looks like I do have copies of Sonic CD for the PC. Cool!

Picked up some loose Nintendo carts at GW:

    Dr Mario, SMB 2 (NES)
    Super Mario 64, Banjo-Tooie (N64)

Less than 2 bucks each. There was also a green N64 and 5 controllers on a shelf, but I left those behind. Money's a little tight since I'm "between jobs" at the moment. Actually seeing the system on the shelf is what made me dig around a bit to see if there were any carts with it.

Tonight I got a Master System lot for $45.

    It includes:

    Hardware:
    • Sega Master System
    • 2 normal controllers
    • 1 joystick controller

    Games:
    • Altered Beast (2) - one boxed, one loose
    • Fantasy Zone - boxed
    • After Burner (3) - one boxed, two loose
    • Double Dragon - loose
    • Alex Kidd – The Lost star - loose
    • Hang on / Safari Hunt - boxed
    • Global Defence - boxed
    • Thunder Blade - loose
    • Great Basketball (2) - both loose
    • R-Type - loose
    • Choplifter - loose
    • Rambo 3 - loose
    • Shinobi - loose
    • Zillion - loose

I contacted the seller over kijiji. The seller was a total jackass and kept saying that I was trying to drive under-negotiate. He originally wanted $50, so I offered $30, but said that I was negotiable. I wanted it for $40. He then said that he couldn't go under $45, so I offered to get the SMS lot and a $20 GG lot for $50, but he wouldn't go under $65. I said that I only wanted the SMS and he sent me a long nasty email. Finally I offered to pay the $45 that he originally offered and he freaked out. I had to send him his original email just to shut him up.

I was pretty annoyed, I usually get along pretty well with people, so I didn't know why this person was being such a jerk. When I went to pick it up (for $45), it turned out that the seller was a chick! A big mean nasty looking thing. Bleh.

Still, I got my SMS so I'm happy

Thats the original release of Sonic CD for the PC. It was the first PC game I ever played and it was also a pack-in with the first HP Pavilion computer packages back in 1996.

I remember seeing Sonic CD installed on some of the HPs at CompUSA back in 96 when I got my first PC. I specifically remember a model that had a 6gb hard drive (!!!) and Sonic CD installed, but I got the 8260 which had a 4gb drive and some crappy edutainment games. I might have to track down one of those bundle versions now that I know they're different from the Expert release I have.

I wouldn't say that was one of the FIRST HP packages, since my parents got one earlier that year that came with a Voodoo 1, Mechwarrior 2, and a gamepad.

On a fruitless quest to buy the new Red Dwarf: Back To Earth DVD, I went to a Movie Trading Company and bought, all loose:

    Pitstop (Colecovision) $3.99
    Miner 2049'er (Colecovision) $3.99
River Raid II (Atari 2600) $3.99
Fantastic Voyage (Atari 2600) Free (buy 3 get 1 free sale)

Normally that store only charges $1.99 for Atari era games, since they don't have rarity lists in their computers to base their prices on. I don't know why they were charging $4 each for these, other than they look different than regular Atari games. This store has done that before, since in the past they've priced their Colecovision games at $9.99, and Pitfall II for the 2600 for $12.99. One location has $10 prices on the Smurf: Gargamel's Castle game for the 2600, just because it's a familiar name to the employees. It's hard to predict what they'll price anything there.

Our first GUI computer was an aforementioned Pavilion. I believe it was the first HP Package. One day in '96, my dad brings home the whole HP package with computer, monitor, speakers, etc. I didnt even know what a computer was really. I was six. Sonic CD was the first thing they let my sister and I play.

The thing was pitifully slow, the cd drive conked after 2 years and the HDD was a 1.5gb. We tolerated it until 1999.

GBA: Justice League Heroes: The Flash (Sealed) $4
NDS: Final Fantasy VII: Revenant Wings (Sealed) $10

I know I probably overpaid on Revenant Wings but it looked so shiny However, I don't know about The Flash. I was offered 50 of them but decided to just take one since I didn't know if they would be worth holding on to or flipping. Suggestions?

I know that my parents' HP was only good for about 4 or 5 years, the board fried or something. My 8260, however, is still solid today. The CD drive is certainly slower, and the hard drive is of the slower 5" variety, but that Pentium II is as fast as ever. Runs Windows 95 beautifully, and plays everything from 80s DOS stuff to System Shock 2. I might bring it to the next lan party and use it for UT99... I've modded it over the years with an 80gb drive (free in a dumpster), 128mb SDRAM ($0.50 at the thrift), and a black case ($15 at CompUSA).

And the sad thing is, it turns out I already have two copies of River Raid II. This is why I want the Video Game Trader app on the iPhone/iPod Touch to have a checklist function. I'm tired of buying games again because I forgot that I picked the same title up a couple years ago. Do I really need three copies of Mythicon's Fire Fly? Or Coconuts, or Name This Game? I think I get so excited that I'm finding anything other than common Atari releases that I totally forget what I already have in my collection.
