Default Xbox 360 Cpu thingy missing

    Yes, you know, the thingy.

If you look at the cpu, the left die, you see these little yellowish things in a circle around it. I just opened up a 360 (error code 0102) and cleaned off the stock thermal paste. Afterwards, I noticed that one of the things was missing. If you look to the right of the CPU, you can see a pair of them. The one that's missing is the top one.

I guess what I'm asking is, is this something important? I'm going to assume it's crucial to the function...if it's something cheap like a cap or mosfet, would I be able to buy another and solder it on?

This is a 2005 model, if that matters. Sorry about making a 360 thread, I'm sure there are a MILLION. The search function won'ot let me search for it since the name is so short

    Small capacitor.

Does yours have chunks of it still there? Are there peaks of solder on the pads? If not, it might not have been soldered in from the factory. Sometimes manufacturers leave off components as part of updating for cost savings.

Sorry for the off-topic: when I need to search for a short term (like 360 in this case) I use Google: "360 site:www.digitpress.com/forum/"

mm, there are 6 super tiny little marks. I can see where it should be, it just isn't there.

Since it's a cap, I think I'll continue with the process. If it were a resistor or something, I wouldn't bother unless I was going to replace it

There is multiple board types. Your board simply doesnt have that in the position the picture does. Your board is fine nothing is missing unless yo unopened your xbox and desolder it off?

No, I certainly didn't desolder it. The issue is that there is one less than all of the pictures I see, and there are 6 little silver dots where it should be.

I did use a q-tip dipped in alcohol on the cpu to remove the crappy stock paste, so I'm a little scared I may have knocked it off while scrubbing...although I don't think that's the case. Perhaps it came off due to the cpu overheating really badly and messing up the solder?
