I'd say that's probably the flip side to it. There's probably some level of rebellion in the youth embracing things that used to be yakuza culture. Like, for a dumb analogy, how baggy pants really caught on in US in the 90s even though it originated from guys in prison not having belts or pants that fit well. Plus, even though it was underground and usually associated with the yakuza, Japan has a long tradition of master tattoo artists that would create huge, intricate designs. The growing acceptance is just allowing what was always there to be visible to a general public, but it's not really reflective of how the average non-tattooed person thinks. But when you look at those that are tattooed, I'd say the Japanese take it more seriously and respect the artistry, while most Americans get tattoos when they're drunk. :P
Sorry, I forgot that some guy living in America would know more about my own society than I do.
Tattoos are everywhere in Japan, you could go to Osaka, Sapporo, Okinawa, etc. and see people with tattoos.
Associating tattoos with Yakuza is crazy, as most Yakuza don't have full-body tattoos. That's more of a 70s / 80s thing.
Actually I remember seeing an episode of Quincy M.E. that talked about gangs, it was pretty corny but mentioned that gang members wore them so they could potentially carry weapons(or other people wouldn't know if they had weapons or not). I'm pretty sure the episode was Baby Rattlesnakes from 1982.
Just got reminded about that episode because of that.
OMG! This guy doesn't have a visible tattoo in this photo! WTF?

And everyone knows that the internet is a reliable source of genuine evidence!
I live in Japan, an ex-boyfriend of 12 months was Black, most of my non-Japanese friends are not White. Besides, you'll never really know what racism is because you'll never be able to walk in the shoes of a non-White person.
Of course we have racism in Japan, but it's directed mostly at Chinese and Koreans. It's more prevalent amongst the older generations.
It's a terrible thing when a respectable thread about rape, devolves into an argument involving petty racial bias.
You are a pro at dodging the point and making an ass out of yourself.
I would take your word for it, but: A. Evidence supplied by people I know in Japan contradicts most of that & B. Accepting your observations as truth would be taking information from the internet seriously. And everyone knows that the internet is a reliable source of genuine evidence, right?
I love how Mimi assumes she knows everything about everyone on this board. Through her amazing psychic abilities, she knows everyone's race, gender, the places they've lived and haven't, the people they've known and haven't, the life experiences they've had and hadn't, so on. Truly astounding, Mimi; if only we all could have your gifts.
Are you saying Mimi is actually a mid-western favored sausage? This concerns me, because I have money riding on Asian Transvestite Jesus.
