Interesting, I dont know why but this reminds me of a FF interview I read years ago [in Next generation magazine I believe]. At that time the Ps2 was still new and there were rumors of FF 5-7 3d remakes brewing for the Ps2, one of the FF producers was being interviewed and he was asked outright if they would ever do multiple remakes of older games [FF 7 and older]. He flat out said no, the closest to a remake we will see from Square is direct-unaltered ports to other systems and thats it. Since doing remakes would take up man-power from their "real" job which is making new games [that is going off memory but is basically what he said].
Of course, that was years ago and here we are today staring at what is likely the 5th or 6th remake of FF IV. And there are rumors that FF 7 is "finally" going to be remade on the PS3. Times have changed for sure, but having played some of Square's recent releases [since FFX] I cant help but feel but that they did detour along the way, caving in to pressure for ports is one indicator, and their game quality isnt what it used to be.
