I saw one of these at a local game store and I don't think it has a controller with it, cosmetically in good shape. They were asking $50. I am debating on getting it but iffy on worth.

That's about what it's worth, or maybe a little less if it doesn't have a controller. It's better than buying one online and then having to ship it, IMO.
Yup. $50-60 with cords and controllers. Talk him down ten bucks since you have to get a controller. If you've never had a toploader get it. I love mine. Too much.
Amazing how much these have dropped in price in the past 10 years.
No controller or no dogbone controller? With no controller at all, I would also try to get it for a little less. If it has the original NES controller, $50 doesn't seem too bad. I've found two in the wild within the last year and a half (both had the dogbone controller); one was around $45 and the other for $70. The second price came with a few games that made the price more worthwhile.
There are a select few that do have AV output instead of RF but they're very rare, basically if anyone complained about the RF only output they could mail it back to Nintendo and the board would be swapped with an AV one. I'm just hoping to come across one of those eventually.
The new board doesn't have RF output at all, just AV output so it doesn't take up anymore space. The connectors on the back with power input are connected to the board, the whole thing gets replaced. It's just the same type of connector used on SNES and N64 systems.
If I can find a picture again I'll post it but it's been awhile since I've seen one. I'll search for it later tonight.
Ok, I found some pics of an official one. It's at least an R9, there really aren't many of them out there.

Another AV one, also has pics that shows the revisions of RF boards. Some RF boards don't produce the wavy lines.

Here's a regular RF one for comparison. That bit of plastic with the connections isn't part of the shell, it's just attached to the board itself.
Some guy on my local Kijiji site has been trying to sell one for $80 with one dogbone controller for a couple of months now. Just this past week he finally dropped the price to $75. Still about $25 too much but you'll never convince him
