Default Need a modern arcade fighter recommendation...

I'd like to hit the arcade with a pocket full of quarters every couple weeks or so. Maybe space out in front of a fighter. I figure that'll be cool because fighters tend to draw the most traffic. It'll provide a decent mix of 1-player/2-player action.

So, what's next on the calendar for a "big" arcade fighter release and how can I practice at home? I really haven't ever been into 3D fighters. I prefer SNK, Marvel, Capcom...something 2D (for the most part), fast, and combo based. Thoughts? I'd just play whatever but if I'm going to get much 2-player action then I need to play what other people play.

That's really all this is about. Prepping for an afternoon in front of a 2D fighter.

You must be under 25. I don't think I could explain it in terms you would understand. Lol. (jk)
Yeah, that's why I'm so concerned about choosing a popular game. IF there is anybody in our last remaining arcades, they may be likely to play this fighter.

Honestly as far as a fighting game you'd probably find at a modern US arcade, your best bet would be Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Tekken 6 still gets play but the Tekken players are all just waiting for TTT2 to come out in the arcade, and if history is any indication the console port will take a while after that to come out.

SF4 and KOFXIII have arcade versions but you'll be hard pressed to find many arcades that actually have either game. SF4 boards are retardedly expensive and KOF just isn't that big a game in the US.

I guess I'd have to be okay with just playing alone all the time if that's the case. I think I'd rather play an old KOF or something rather than force myself to like a 3D. I don't have anything against 3D, I just don't really enjoy the art or non-linear environments.

If you can find a KOF XIII cab, you can always practice at home on a PC running a dump of the arcade game. Same goes for most Taito Type X games.

I don't know where you live but here's a listing of the known KOF 13 cabs in America

    http://dreamcancel.com/kofxiii-arcad...net-locations/

Coming out on consoles next month if you can't find the cab.

That's roughly equivalent to how many operating arcades exist in the US.

Because it's a pretty regular sight in Japanese arcades, same as SF4. Word is SNK sold out of their run of KOFXIII machines so I suppose it was a success for them in that regard. Just, not many arcades imported it here; as far as I know neither the local arcades nor the Gameworks in Chicago ever got it.

SF4, offhand, I know exists down in Austin, Chicago, and on the west coast, and I believe those are the current Super AE versions.

Shoutouts to Galloping Ghost Arcade in IL!

Before clicking that link, I read the replies in this thread, and saw there were only 8 locations. I said to myself, "Wait...really? There's one like a half hour from my house!" This really put me into perspective of how nice Galloping Ghost Arcade really is. If anyone's ever in the Chicago area, I would suggest checking the place out. 15 bucks for free play on every machine.

As far as fighting games at an arcade would go...honestly, by this time next year, the fighting game community won't know what game to play. There's gonna be so many (hopefully) great games out by then. At the top of my head...

Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition 2012
    Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
    King of Fighters XIII
    BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend
    Tekken Tag Tournament 2
    Soul Caliber V
    Street Fighter x Tekken

I bolded SFxT because that game looks simply amazing, and I had a ton of fun with the build I got to play at Evo

Anyway, out of these games...KoFXIII is coming out pretty soon, which I'm really hyped for. You should definitely pick that up.

What arcade do you live by?

UMvC3 and KOFIII look awesome!! Too bad there isn't a KOF in my state & based on what I read about UMvC3 getting an arcade release, I won't hold my breath for that one either. I live near Cactus Jack's. Been in business for as long as I can remember.

Yeah I think we can all agree on the unfortunate state of US arcades but unless you live in Cali (or even NY maybe?) there isn't much of a choice-you pretty much have to go the home route. But it can be done, just grab some quality arcade sticks and invite some other interested friends over for fight night!

Yes, I am 41 years old and it is a very sad state of affairs out there. Arcades as we once knew them no longer exist. There are still a handfew out there, but it's just not the same anymore. They used to be such magical places. I mean, it is what it is. Technology just got so advanced that there is no longer a need. But it was a great time and an experience I will never forget.

I've been wondering if it's possible for arcades to make a come-back. I mean, retro always ends up cool again. The only thing is that games cost so much to create & manufacture these days. I don't know how they could turn a profit for under a buck (or two) per play. That's 2-4x the price it was in '85, after adjusting for inflation.

I'm sure arcades will return, just not in the same form it was in '85. "Arcade" as in a building designed specifically for electronic personal entertainment. Not sure what that will entail but I imagine it to involve synthetic narcotics, cartons of cigarettes, and ninjas.

EDIT: Oh, I wonder what traffic was like in a "typical" arcade in '85? I mean, I guess it wouldn't be hard to imagine a profitable modern arcade if the traffic were actually there.
