What Game(s) Are You Playing? Daily Check (2011)

There used to be a multi-year "Whatcha playin'?" thread, but after nearly nine years it grew too unwieldy to use. Thus, we will now have a new "now playing" thread each year instead. And to get things started...

My birthday was on October 1st, and I got Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Super Mario Galaxy as gifts. I've been playing both of these games, and I must say I prefer the action of Tatsunoko versus the lots of text, the occasional needless motion controls, and the tutorials of Mario Galaxy. However I am enjoying both. Then again, Mario Galaxy does make me feel sleepy, so I'm more likely to play Tatsunoko at night and Galaxy during the day.

I am currently waiting for all of my Sega Saturn stuff to come in.

Outside of that I have been playing a lot of the better Genesis Sonic Hacks.

Rigth now I'm playing Left 4 Dead 2. I'm trying to complete all campaigns, offline, on Expert.

That's about it at the moment. I started Bioshock (360 version) a few weeks ago, but I didn't really enjoy it. I'll probably get back to it at some point though.

I finished up Dead Island over last weekend and really enjoyed it. Now I'm starting up with Shadows of the Damned and its fun so far. I need to get back to a few others I have that are partially finished though before the holidays roll around.

I just played the final Act of Gears of War 3 about an hour ago. Awesome trilogy - LOVED IT! Then my boys and I played some multiplayer COD: MW2. Here's what else I'm playing:

PSP - God of War: Ghost of Sparta (almost done)

That's it. Now that I'm done with GOW3, I'm going to jump back into God Of War III which I stopped about 2 months ago and need to finish.

I have been playing lots of Gears of War 3 multiplayer lately. I also gave the Forza 4 demo a try and played some more Halo Reach. And of course I still check in with the Battlefield 3 beta but I'm slowly losing interest in it, if only because it's on one map with one game type.

Super Castlevania IV hasn't loosened its grip on my SNES for the better part of a week. Today I played some Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (PS2) to mix things up.. er, really, it was to listen to the music.

That's honestly the best thing about it, IMO. I played it straight through, from start to finish, for the first (and only) time a few months ago, and I honestly see why there's so much 3D Castlevania hate. The wife was there one day when I was playing it -- it was right after I completed it, actually -- and I had started a new game and was just dicking around a bit when she just came out and said; "this game looks...really boring". I tried to defend it for a second, but decided to just concede that it was.

Thanks again for the new topic, Nz17. I hope more people will participate now that we have a reliably functioning topic.

Anyway, I beat Croc: Legend of the Gobbos for PlayStation, clearing it 100% even if my save file doesn't say so for some reason. The secret island was pretty lame overall. The stages weren't anything that special, although I should probably be glad that they weren't terribly difficult. It was kind of neat that they were built using concepts from all of the previous stages (each being devoted to the stages of each prior island), but at the same time it was very rehashed. The secret final boss just sucked. Both the boss itself and the ending were better with the normal final boss. I swear, I spent probably at least 30 minutes on one life alone trying to beat the secret boss just because it's impossible to tell if you're doing the right thing or not. I spent all that time going around and around in circles hitting the gongs since he reacted as if he was taking damage, and I noticed that he'd also move higher and higher. The moving platforms that circle him would also slowly change their pattern, so taking all of those signs into consideration, I figured that was progressing the fight. Turns out it was a complete waste of time and what I was pulling off was infinitely more impressive than the actual way to beat him. Turns out you have to hit all four gongs really fast, before he starts shooting again, and that's it. You don't even need to use the floating platforms either because you can just jump the chasm. Of course, I was smart enough to consider that maybe all the gongs needed to ring simultaneously, but they don't really work like that. You hit them and then they just stop. There's no decent indicator, not visually or audibly, to show that you need to hit them within a certain time span. Overall, just really dumb.

I started Genji: Dawn of the Samurai today, and it's snooze fest so far. It should be awesome since it's basically a combination of two games I really enjoy (Bujingai and Onimusha), but actually it's less than the sum of it's parts.

I've been picking my way, in my normal quick playing fashion, through Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection and SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Classics. This is all in between daily bouts with WoW.

Thought about trying to 100% Batman: Arkham Asylum before Arkham City is released, but I don't expect that to go well.

Right now I'm working on:
- Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES)
- Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PSone) -- when it gets here in the mail
- Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventure (GBC)

I had Final Fantasy III (SNES) and Parasite Eve (PSone) in that list, but I've put them off so I could concentrate on the new ones. Putting games off in the middle of the story is a bad idea for me. I end up starting a new game because I forget what's going on.

With my computer acting kinda wonky, I can't really play many 3D intensive games, so I'm going through my Steam backlog.

Right now I'm playing Emerald City Confidential. It's an adventure game set in the Wizard of Oz universe, but with its own take on things. Cowardly Lion is a lawyer who's the head of a criminal organization, for example.

I just started Chapter 2. It's a pretty interesting semi-indie title.

Oddly enough I been playing some Dark Castle for the Genesis after the AVGN reviewed it. I tried to give it a chance in a recent video but those controls are just too annoying to deal with.

I finally retired Croc: Legend of the Gobbos for PlayStation to the shelf after completing the bonus areas (I only found 2 or 3 of the 10 on my own). I thought that maybe there was a slim chance that they'd contribute to the percentage, but, nope, it's just glitched or something. The final bonus area sure ticked me off. It's more of a trap than a bonus since the jumps are so tricky. Good thing I had a huge stockpile of lives, and since I'm done with the game, I don't care about blowing through them. Anyway, it's put away now, so I just need to decide what to dig into next. I still don't think I'm quite ready for a text-heavy game so soon, so we'll see.
