NES Game Collection
I am building an NES game collection and was wondering if anyone else was doing the same. I just recently started and only have about 9% of the titles. I wanted to know if anyone else was working on an NES collection, how long you have been working on it, and your progress?
Yah, I have been working on my NES collection since 1985 when I got mine for Christmas. Up to about 500 games, all kinds of controllers, and both front-loader and top-loader consoles. Overall, you will find NES collecting to be fun and rewarding. There are so many good games in the library. I would recommend flea markets, garage sales, and charity thrift stores over ebay and game gavel if you can do it. You will find some sweet deals locally that never will turn up through online sources and save boat loads of cash in the process.

I've been collecting NES games off and on from around 1996-1997, but more so in the last 3 or 4 years. I live in a small town and only 1 of the 5 pawn shops here mess with NES games. All the other pawn shops say that there is no money to made with them. Luckily the one pawn shop that did have them had about 35 complete games for $2.00 a piece, so I bought every one of them. Some of them were really worth it including, 5 Capcom games (Mega Man 5 was one of them). Also both Metalgear/Snakes Revenge were included. That same pawn shop was also where I found Demons Crest complete for SNES for $4.00
I have a complete loose NTSC licensed set and about 500 boxes/manuals. Took a few years, and it was before prices were anywhere near where they are now (finished summer of '09), but it was a lot of fun.
My best advice at the beginning is to buy large lots on Ebay and sell or trade your doubles. You'll knock many of your list on the cheap and won't stall out until you're near the 500 game mark.

Complete loose NTSC set, but have all but 120 them boxed CIB. My advice is to have fun and go at an affordable pace. Rertro game expos are the best way to score games fast, but that cannot work for everyone. I've been collecting NES since '03, and am up to 610 licensed games, and 21 unlicensed. I think I have about 200ish or so boxed as well. Best advice would be to constantly go to flea markets and thrift stores, as well as buying large lots on ebay for good deals and selling/trading your doubles. Also a *key* word of advice is to constantly monitor the values of games, especially the more uncommon/rare ones so you always have the knowledge of what they're going for at anytime. Also, have a bunch of fun with it, there are a TON of underrated gems that a lot of mainstream gamers have never heard of.
I've been at this off and on since I first got one for Christmas as a kid. I'm currently at under 20 titles to go for a complete US set (licensed & unlicensed) and also have a nice sized Famicom collection. As others mentioned here the best route is through lots, and then flipping ones you don't need to grab the others. Lots of hunting at Flea Markets and pawn shops have also paid off well for me over the years. One of these days I may complete the whole set, but with homebrews and more coming out all the time I'm in no hurry and it is fun to keep hunting.

About 2 years ago I started collecting NES games. It pretty much started with a awesome deal with a top loading NES with 12 games for like $35 ( They said they have the Wii now ) and once I plugged that in and it was over. I didn't like the horizontal linees and the mono sound and was too lazy to mod it so I sold it and bought a ( NES Clone ), that was a mistake. While the NES clone was cool, it wasn't scratching my NES itch. I really hated how the NES clone was not 100% perfect. I've since sold the clone, bought a regular NES and have been happy every since.
I'm guessing that I have about 60 games right now. While initially I enjoy looking on ebay for games I find it more fun to find games out in wild at yard sales and thrift stores.
** Careful ** Collecting video games is addictive as crack, I've since picked up a Sega Master System, Sega Genesis and Atari 7800 too.
I've been collecting since 2003 and currently have 254 individual NES games. My rarest titles include TMNT Tournament Fighters (a $1.99 Goodwill find), Sunday Funday (a $1 find last year), Hatris (a recent $2 thrift find), and a boxed Galaxy 5000 (paid about $12 shipped on Amazon). I generally only buy whatever strikes of my interest (and of course, the rarities that one would be crazy to pass up) and I've sold off a number of common games I had no interest in ever playing again.
I don't buy NES games too often these days, as it's getting tougher to find stuff I'm interested in at reasonable prices. The average price for NES games at most of the local thrifts tends to hover around $5, but sometimes I'll have a nice surprise like the aforementioned $2 Hatris, or a $2.99 Motor City Patrol I found at a Goodwill a while back. So don't set your hopes too high when it comes to the thrifts, but of course, don't rule them out either.
Small town?
Even the larger cities around my area have three pawn shops tops.
I guess there's five because my town has a lot of crack addicts.

I've been collecting NES games for between 2 and 3 years now. I'm up to just shy of 200 games. I dont go for complete copies, the boxes and manuals dont really do much for me, it makes them harder to store, and 10x more expensive. At first I was buying every game I came across to build my collection, but lately I've been going for quality over quantity and am thinking of selling about 30 games. Buy the ones you like and youll play and save your money from the shitty games... unless youre going for a complete collection
I've been collecting off and on for about 25 years, or ever since I received my first NES as a snot-nosed seven year old in rural Alabama though it didn't become a "collection" until sometime afterward. My collection now stands at 433 titles (thank you NES Collector, a must have if you have an iPhone), though only about 100 are boxed and complete. Every one has been found "in the wild", though I'm nearing the point where eBay and the like are going to be the only real options to find stuff I don't already have. These days the local options are pretty limited compared to 10-15 years ago when independent video game stores were all over the place.
I've collected for about 2.5 years. I have a full set (minus SE). The last 40 games where a huge pain... all rares for me. It's okay though, the hunt is half the fun.
I'm currenty sitting at 458, hoping to hit 500 soon and maybe 600 eventually. It's a wonderful system to collect for, but I'm almost to the point where it starts getting tough to track down the stuff you don't already have. It's a good probem to have, though.
I'm at 750 plus with all the licensed NES carts and I been searching since 1999 but I'm still missing some unlicensed ones like Cheetahmen2 and Hot Slots. Here's my collection pics:
