What would probably be better to start a gmaing collection of: NES or Atari 2600? Those might be the 2 I decide to try to collect for sometime so I'm trying to get a feel of the field as to best buys, finds, etc.

I would probably say the NES, just because I'm noticing fewer 2600 games in the wild anymore, but it seems that there is still a good quantity, and selection of NES games still availabel for decent prices. I think a lot more people are seeing the 2600's as "valuable" and I have noticed an explosion in prices recently, but NES game prices around here have dropped a bit...
NES, for the sole reason that you have FuncoEBStops for resources.

Of course, it must be the sole King of Consoles, the one and only true classic, the one that started it all, The Atari 2600.
There is so much more to the 2600 than there is to NES. Just consider this: the Atari 2600 section in the new Digital Press Guide will be about three times as big as the NES section. The sheer number of game variations and its history are overwhelming, even today
Now there's classic videogame history for ya! Go out and be part of that - I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy the wonders of the Atari 2600
Cheers,
Marco
Thanks for the help so far guys! That's true about Funclos/Gamestops about having NES games, even though my local ones do have the games loose.
Are more people getting into Atari 2600 collecting, that's why you don't see most of them in the open anymore too?

Yeah, the NES stuff is easier to find in the wild alright. Only thing is the eternal fight against the console, unless you have a top-loader.
I have the orginal NES myself...I don't think i've ever actually seen the top-loader NES...or the SNES 2 for that matter...

I've got a top-loading NES for trade if anyone is interested... I may have a dogbone controller, too (they are so much more comfortable to hold the the original square controllers!)
I personally vote for NES, but my opinion has been deemed to be less than nothing.

What I actually want for my SNES now is 1 or 2 new ASCII pads...

I collect for both but started with the 2600. If at some point you intend to do the same thing it might be a good idea to start with the 2600. As several people have said it's getting harder to find stuff in the wild. If you spend a year or so concentrating on the NES then decide to collect for the 2600 you may be SOL.
If you just want to stick with one and amass a big collection quickly, easily and cheaply the NES is probably the way to go.
What's possibly more rewarding and fulfilling? And why's more stuff disappearing?
My Gaming Collection (Now at Google Drive!)
That kind of depends on you. If you care more about graphics and games that are closer to modern style games, NES is going to appeal to you more. If you're like me and you just like the quick, quartermuncher kind of games, the 2600 is going to be more your bag.Originally Posted by Kaine23
Also are you more of a player or collector? There's a lot more stuff for the 2600 that is real tricky to find. If you enjoy the hunt, this is the console for you. Downside: most of the rare games aren't a whole lot of fun to play. The NES stuff isn't as challenging to find (with some odvious exceptions) and most of it is pretty fun to play.
Personally, I think NES stuff is a lot easier to find and from a collection standpoint I get a much bigger rush finding a rare 2600 cart than I do from finding a rare NES one. (And I have more rare (6 and above in the DP guide) NES carts than 2600, considering I don't really collect NES, I see that as a sign that NES stuff is easier to find.)
Well, because it's old. I remember in the early 90's it was a LOT easier to find 2600 carts at thrift stores. The thing is, the system is almost 25 years old and most people who are going dump their stuff have done it by now. Plus there are a lot more people looking for it now, so there's a lot more competetion for a lot less stuff. And why's more stuff disappearing?
Now, with the NES, I still don't think we've gotten to that point yet. I don't know if we will because back in the 2600 days, that stuff was just looked on as old worthless junk. Now people tend to hang on to their stuff, convinced it is made of gold.
Thanks, Capt. Is what we find, be it Atari 2600, Vectrex, NES, SNES, etc really gonna be worth that much now or later though?

No one knows, Kaine. I've often wondered if this stuff is going to die out with us. Plus, talke a look at baseball card collecting. Seems like that took a big dumper a while ago and it used to be a pretty sure thing. I'd say if you are collection for financial reasons, you probably picked the wrong hobby. Me, I like to play the games. That's the bottom line. As long as I like to play the games, they'll always have value to me.
Well, you can do a lot more things with games then you can with card collecting.
Sorry if I sound too much like a noob asking about starting collecting, just trying to dip a toe into this hobby for the time being.

We were all n00bs at one time Kaine. Don't sweat it.
The bottom line is, collect whatever makes you happy. You'll never grow tired of the hobby if you follow that rule.
Very true, Capt. perhaps later I'll post what NES games I have already...
