Default Hardwiring a flash cart to a video game system: Has it been done?

Has anyone ever heard of someone hardwiring a flash cart to a system so that it loads up if there is no game cartridge inserted into the system? I have a N64 controller, noac famiclone that goes to a game selection menu if there is no famicom cartridge inserted, so I know something (sorta) similar is evidently achievable.

I have a famiclone system that has an additional card edge connector at the bottom solder side of the board, one can plug a bare cartridge board in there. It acts as a built-in game when no cart is plugged on top.

From the top of my head, there are other systems or clones that can do that as well, like this Sega clone:

That is pretty awesome. If I was a bigger fan of the Genesis I'd have to track one down.

Is there a technical term for this?

Some basic logic might be able to handle this.
I fix things. You name it, I'll work on it. Want something modded? Recapped?
