yes the thick (or multiple) manuals can be one of the cases
sometimes the games came with a demo like PAL Crash Bandicoot 1
for other games there is no apparant reason, but maybe it was because Sony didn't have their own design of box yet back then (PAL)

I remember reading an interview with Vic Ireland (years ago) where he mentions Sony's double case rule that was apparently pretty strict. Working Designs wanted to do single cases with seperate manuals or something like that, but Sony wouldn't have it. Anyone remember this?

There's also the reverse, two discs in a regular thin case. RE Code Veronica for Dreamcast does this, but I can't recall anything for Playstation.

I know of at least two US examples for the Turbo: Vasteel, which comes with a big fold-out map (and has a weird cardboard cover over the case), and Sim Earth, which has a super thick manual. (Might & Magic III might be another one, I'm not too sure.) Oddly enough, both of these games are in actual two-disc cases, meaning they can hold two discs; all the PSX ones I've seen could only hold one, and had a logo or something on the other side.

Off the top of my head, I know The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Strider 2, and LSD (Japanese game) all came with 2 discs in a regular case.

Some (the first?) printings of RE3 and Dino Crisis came with two discs in a single jewel case (one game, one demo). Some versions of RE2 Greatest Hits had both discs in a regular jewel case too.

I'm pretty sure(but not 100% certain) that Contra: Legacy of War came in both a normal single case and a double cd case. Mine came in a double cd case(with no 3D glasses ironically) but I've seen copies in single cases before. I'm just not sure if any of them were new.

In Cold Blood, is another that came with those odd cases.

The Rollcage Special Edition for PSX also has two discs in a single-sized jewelcase; one is the game disc, the other a soundtrack CD.

It is odd that Sony seems to have required the use of those dual jewels for plenty of games that could have just used a standard 2-cd single jewelcase, why did they do that?

As for games with one disc in a dual jewel, from what I have Vandal Hearts, Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels, Alundra, Alundra 2, Beyond the Beyond, and Yu-Gi-Oh!: Cursed Memories. In all cases, they use the dual jewel because the manuals are too thick to fit in a single jewelcase's small manual space. Alundra 2's manual is pretty borderline, that one almost fits in a single jewelcase; maybe they wanted it to be in the thicker case, so they made the manual just thick enough to require one?

Then there are some that are one disc games with a second bonus disc in a dual jewel, like Brave Fencer Musashi, Persona 2, Ridge Racer Type 4, and probably more.

Does Brave Fencer Musashi count? It's two discs, but the second disc is an unrelated FF8 demo. I just bought a Musashi in a garage sale for 25 cents last weekend but it is missing the entire second tray and has no booklet. The jewel case was really filthy too, so I had to replace it into a new single jewel case. I am probably the only collector out there that has a one jewel cased edition of Musashi in his collection. That is until I can find a proper one in the wild to upgrade with.

    How about Street Fighter Collection??

    It didn't need a big case...Just a Jewel Case that holds 2 CD's

Tron Bonne came with two discs? *Goes to check his own copy, which he swears he's never seen a second disk with before*

I hope my bumping doesn't annoy anyone, but I find this topic interesting and wanted to bring up Suikoden. Anyone know why that had a double case? There's only one disc, and the manual doesn't seem any thicker than those in most standard cases (like, say, Suikoden 2). It's always seemed weird

Several double cased video games could fit on a regular case but marketing made them double case to have better presence on retail
