Default Wtf? Contra 3 vs Independence day

Just played Contra 3 (or better the pal version Super Probotector) again and watched the intro scene.....it reminds me on something
there's this huge round cloud(?) coming down from the sky, stopping above skyscrapers. Then a laser ray thingy destroys the buildings.
Is it just me or has Roland Emmerich just played TOO much contra 3.
I mean the contra 3 intro scene and the main-ufos independence day attacks look exactly the same!
coincidence or with a view to contra 3?
    is this possible?

Yes, lay off the cider my friend :D

Interesting you mention that; the sequel to Contra 3, The Hard Corps, has a section where you're jetbiking down a highway with futuristic buildings ala Batman: The Movie

cider = colloquial phrase for "Likker" or "alkahaul"

To be quite honest, I've never met somebody who was a fan of the changes made for Super Probotector. I like the NES titles though :D

Probotector was a great concept but the sprite hacks were never up to snuff imo. Whoever did the regional alterations (Presumably a Konami branch in Europe) just couldn't keep up with the original Japanese sprite art.

Even the Megadrive Probotector lacked personality by calling the robots numbers instead of real names. Poor Browny!!

I digress, back to the topic at hand!!!

The intro to Contra III was most likely influenced from those classic saucer invasion movies where their death rays would demolish buildings underneath as they whisked by. Wouldn't be much of a stretch to say ID4 culled from this bit of movie legacy as well.

Funny you should mention Independence Day in correlation to this, as the ending of Metal Slug X is very similar to something that happened in the movie. Once you blast the shit out of the huge UFO, a guy from the rebel army (your former enemies, who join up with you at the end to fight the alien invasion) flies a plane right up into the center "abductor-thingie" of the UFO, not unlike Randy Quaid's drunk-pilot character did to save the planet in ID4. That was the first thing that came to mind upon seeing that ending. Of course I'm not sure about Metal SLug's timeline, so the influence may have been vice-versa.

I don't think there are many videogame inspired scenes in Hollywood movies, but in Asia there are many more. A friend recently put me onto Fulltime Killer. Its climax as a huge Metal Slug reference as it has weapons and equipment hidden in crates as though they were powerups. And Metal Slug also pays homage to The Killer, a great Hong Kong gangster movie.

    Check it out:

I've never seen the movie, but I want to now And Bio-Zombie also supposed to have quite a few Resident Evil gags. City Hunter has Jackie Chan doing showing some hardcore Street Fighter II respect.

Damn, beat me to it Jay! Some film I saw the other day (can't for the life of me remember the title though) had footage of Rival Schools 2 cut into one of the fight scenes, which was rather nice I thought.

Anyways, back to the topic: Sagat in Streetfighter II always reminds me of the bad guy in the Jean Claude Van-Damme epic "Kickboxer." Yes, I am clutching at straws.
