Wow! What an odd little game! It's almost like River City Ransom in the Wild West!

This game reminds me of the SNES Mystical Ninja game with regards to the navigation of the town. Great setting! First level took me through a old timey western town, a farm with pigs and chickens as enemies and then a fight along a moving train leading up to the boss. I look forward to the variety in future levels. It's a shame I don't have a second player around to play as the indian.

The hit detection is kind of wonkey though, and the enemies just don't stop coming, making it very fast paced. But hey, I need a challenge. Thanks Morbis!

Opinion: The reason I picked this game is because it is a few tweeks away from being an unknown classic. I think this game is superior to Konami's Lone Ranger in just about every way. Cowboy Kid really makes me feel like I'm in the old west. The music is EXCELLENT, the story and plot progress is great, and the 2 player simultaneous option is an added bonus. On the down side, the hit detection sucks. Enemies hit you easily even if they are on a different horizontal plain. Also, controlling your jump is tricky and takes a bit of getting used to. This is especially true in the Indian level where you have to jump the logs on the North river. Overall though, this is my favourite post-SNES release.

It's too bad this game came out so late. Even with its glaring problems, this could have been a hit title if released around 1990.

Beat the game a few days back. Those bosses take a crazy load of bullets before they go down.

I like how all the subtle racist depictions of indians and chinamen slipped through Nintendo's censors.

Opinion: This is an interesting little game that I picked up boxed about a year or so from a local Gamestop, due mostly to the fact that it's pretty tough to find. I remember Nintendo Power reviewing the game at some point and it looked like an interesting game that combined some RPG elements with side-scrolling action. Personally, I think it falls a bit short of my expectations, but it's certainly a fun game. The biggest complaint that I have about it is that the play control leaves a lot to be desired. As someone already mentioned, the hit detection is also rather poor. The graphics are nice and colorful, the music is pretty good, and I think that the two-player simultaneous feature is a very nice touch. I remember having some fun with the two-player mode when I first got it, but I haven't really bothered to touch the game since (until now, that is). I haven't put much time into the game, just played it enough to get a feel for it again, but right now I'd give it about 6.5/10.

    Platform: My NES

Progress: Not very far, just tried out a couple of the different levels.

Challenge: Haven't played it enough yet to attempt any of the challenges.

Oh....another thing that I wanted to comment on was that Dr. Morbis compared this game to Lone Ranger. Personally, I love Lone Ranger, but that's another game that I haven't picked up in a while. To be honest, I think that Lone Ranger is a far better game, I think that it has a lot of variety and also has some great graphics, music, and play control; it's also another one of those "unsung classics" that hardly anyone knows about. Like I said in my previous post, Cowboy Kid is a decent game, but I strongly prefer Lone Ranger - to each his own, though.

I played this game for a few hours, but the wacky collision detection frustrated me to no end.

It's a shame too, because other than that the game has a definite charm.
