Default Give Your Favorite 16-bit Games a Mention!

All this technology applied to video games today is nice and all... but you can't beat the classics! Particularly the 16-bit classics. Be it Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Turbo Grafx, or any other 16-bit system, just take a few lines to discuss some of your favorite games of the 'Sweet Sixteen' era.

Gunstar Heroes pretty much blew me away when I first played it. Here's a game with kickass gameplay, and a great soundtrack. Combining different weapons was a new concept to me. This one is a legendary title.

I have to mention Bonk's Revenge being it was one of my first 16-bit games and still remains one of my favorites. The graphics still inspire me to purchase coloring books.

I'd also like to add Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World. The reasons... you already know.

Go ahead, give your favorite 16-bit titles a mention. Why are they your favorites in the first place?

I'll start with a two favorites - games that I NEVER get tired of!

Streets of Rage for Genesis. That's right, not the sequels, which are awesome in their own right, but the original. Part of it is nostalgia - I played the game to death with friends when it came out, and the whole "never trust Santulli" legend was born. But to this day, I'll play right up to the stage where I can throw bad guys off of the lift. There's nothing more satisfying than that, especially after just beating them silly with conventional methods for 5 stages.

Blazing Lazers for Turbografx. It's still my favorite shooter. I know it's not the best, but your ship gets such an insane amount of power when it's maxed out that I find myself going back to it again and again just for that "power trip".

Final Fantasy III -An obvious choice, but one that I couldn't avoid. It's easily my favorite 16-bit title, offering visual panache, an impressive story, and gameplay with a variety well beyond other 16-bit RPGs. Many say that it has yet to be bettered by any subsequent Final Fantasy, and it's hard for me to argue with that.

Axelay -The days of the Genesis, SNES, and Turbo-16 were rife with first-rate shooters, but Axelay remains my favorite. Both the psuedo-3D levels and the side-scrolling stages had excellent design and graphical impact, while the weapons were highly innovative. And though it was hard, it was, like all great shooters, the good kind of hard.

Phantasy Star IV -The first two Phantasy Stars tend to get more recognition, but I still say that the final Genesis outing is the best. The battles are speedy and enjoyable, and the storytelling is quite satisfying. If PSIV was the end of Phantasy Star as we knew it, one couldn't ask for a finer farewell.

I could list so many more, but I'll let someone else take the stage for now.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 - These games are still fun to play. Sometimes you just want to run through a game a fast as you can and Sonic is happy to oblige

Bonk - I played this game over and over. For some reason I never played bonk 2 or 3.

Final Fantasy III - This is one of the few games where I would randomly enter game genie codes just to see what happened.

Mario Kart - I still play this with my old roomate.

Pilotwings - The 64 version just didn't feel right.

Mario All Stars - As stated previously, Duh!

Final Fantasy 3 - Since it appears the rest of the board has ranted on this one, I will keep you from misery.

Shadowrun - A fun game that oozes with gameplay and style. At the time it was a game that broke many barriers.

Lost Vikings - A brillant game. I can't get enough of the insane puzzles and humor this game has.

Super Metroid - Ah, yes. The recent Metroid games has reminded me how great this game really is. Awesome soundtrack, tigh controls, great item pickups. It is truly a great game.

    Zelda - I'm a Zelda-freak. Need I say more?

@Jason, you're gonna like Zelda LTTP and four swords on AGB then. it is exactly identical to the original. I'm not sure but I think they redid the dialogue in the game. Also, there are new dungeons in the game, but they are only accessible if you play the four swords side of the game. The only problem with this is that you NEED 4 people each with their own copy of the game in order to play the four swords. This will be easier said than done for most people.

Genesis: Dune-Battle for Arrakis: My first RTS game and I still love to play it for hours on end..."movin' out!"

Genesis: Zero Tolerance: My first FPS, crude by today's standards, but nonetheless amazing what they were able to do with a standard Genny cart...scaling, dozens of huge levels, multiplayer deathmatches (with 2 gennys and the link cable) and guts that slid down walls when you shotgunned a baddie close enough to one!

Genesis: Robocop vs. Terminator: A basic platformer/shooter that really comes alive when you plug in the codes....enemy babes in leather, violent deaths and great sound!

SNES: Donkey Kong Country: The game that made me buy the system.....amazing graphics for its time and loads of goofy fun!

Wheni think gaming, i think the sprite era, in particular, the 16 bitters. Theres some nostalgia factor, but i also LOVE sprite based design. Sometimes the ultra realistic look of modern games turn me off .... But anyhoo, my picks...

PC Engine: Dracula X (best old school styled Castlevania before Konami ventured off into Metroid-vania), Star Parodia, Gunhed/Blazing Lazers, Ys Books I+II (one of the best rpgs ever..kick ass music to boot), Lords of Thunder, Download II, Devils Crush (pinball + shump elements=classic)

SNES: Axelay (fave shmup ever), Chrono Trigger, Mario All Stars, Mario Kart

Genesis: Gunstar Heroes, Outrun (best racer EVER), Streets of Rage 2.

Neo Geo: Baseball Stars 2, Last Blade, Sam. Shodown 2, Windjammers, anything Metal Slug
