If you are an RPG fan which I'm not than you might have enjoyed this era in videogame history. I'm not saying their aren't any good games in this era I'm just saying I only like around 15-20 of them. I am a big football game fan and I can say without question that sports games sucked a big one on these three systems. It wasn't untill NFL2K on the DC did sports games become fun again. No matter how great the new Madden is on the PS2 it will suck on the PS1. But really who cares since this year its all about the new ESPN game.

Well, opinions on how good this 'era' of videogaming has been has nothing to do with the last games coming out for a system.

The simple fact is there ARE some confirmed games coming out in the next few months for the PlayStation and there may be a few others. I think that by Christmas we can say the PS One is dead. (Although I'm still curious if Sony is making them.)

The last Brazilian Megadrive game was released in 2001 (Show do Milhao Vol. 2), so if imports are counted, the Megadrive/Genesis had a 13-year stretch aswell.

The last European Master System game (Smurfs 2) had a '96 copyright date so that's an 11-year stretch, and Brazilian games were again released later than that.

Yep... and they're still releasing a few games for it over there. Interestingly enough, even SEGA has released games in the past year or two.

I heard rumors that Dragonball Z Final Bout would be reprinted. I guess a rumor is all it is.

Oh well. I heard the game was awful, but you would think that maybe the company that released it (Atari?) would want some of the money people are spending on used copies on ebay.

The way I see it, the PS1 just "retired", and not dead yet. It's almost like the PS2, the "offspring" of the PS1, put the old system in a sort of situation like an adult puts an aging parent in a retirement or nursing home, hence the few sports games that the PS1 has coming out. It's sure not having any kicks in life anymore, and is merely living without any real fun to speak of.

...okay, that was an odd way to put it. I think I oughta get some sleep or something.

IMHO as long as Sony still has a factory making PSones, it's still alive. When the facotry shuts down, the PS1 is dead.

Last I checked, Sony is still building PSones, so it's stil alive and well, because it provides a cheap budget system. I suspect when the [PS2] drops to $100, Sony will pull the plug on the PS1 factory.

PURE RUMOR. God some one tried to start this on the GameFAQs boards a while back and the PSOne boards were flooded with kiddies asking about this. Kid was misquoting information and making huge leaps on the game. The REAL talk is that with DragonBall Boudokai 3 this will be a hidden/earned bonus game so in a round about way its getting rereleased BUT not as its own standalone title and NOT for the PS but the PS2. BanDai no longer controls the release of DB/DBZ games in the US thats Atari's business now, so it getting rereleased on its own accord is BZZT wrong answer.

Wow great thinking Musical.... oh wait, the PSOne has been at 50 bucks for QUITE A WHILE. As far as I can tell with the incredibly small quantitiy that are still floating around in stores the system looks like it is out of production, and they are just selling off the back stock of the system (BUT they could be on the littlest trickle production run, its hard to say as they dont date the build dates of PSOnes and arnt changing model numbers so any evolution is hard to prove). PSOne LCD Screens alone still sell for 129 but in most places theyve dropped the combo's themselves down to 50 (IF you can find any). However if you meant that when the PS2 drops to 100 your going to be waiting at least a year, and by our calculations (us PSOne collectors that is) the System is new gameless in 2 months. That would be a HUGE waste of money on SCEJ/SCEA's part to keep producing a system that is that stagnant in the games dept itself for over a year to when the PS2 would finally price drop to that low.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I view the PS1/PS2 setup as similar to the Atari 2600/7800 setup... eventually the 7800/PS2 becomes cheap enough so the budget console is no longer needed and manufacture stops. But in the meantime, Even if the games stop, PS1 will still have a huge catalog. Sony is taking advantage of PS1's huge catalog of titles and cheap pricetag to draw in new customers.

Oh, and thanks for pointing out my typo. It's fixed now.

Ya know I like to think that my two degrees and a minor have given me some potential for thought and rational thinking when it comes to the real world. But our degrees really mean little when it comes down to it all.

I honestly feel that Sony isnt as worried about making sure that they are producing new PS/PSOne systems for a couple of reasons.

    0. How many new PS games have come out this year??? I think I can honestly count them on one hand, or just barely breaking over to that second hand. Its been no more than ten I'm almost certain.

    1. There are over 100 MILLION PS/PSOne/PS2 systems produced, with probably close to half of them sitting in the United States. With no new games avaliable (by October) and stores selling off back stocked games (which are almost all budget titles to begin with) at 9.99 and less, I would think that SCEA isnt all that worried about the system. Honestly almost all the big developers left the PSOne over a year ago, and EA is only putting these final two sports titles out because of reportadily huge sales (300k) for their 3 titles released last year (all of which were sports).

    2. PS2 is backwards compatable with the PSOne library (save for 15 games), and so to just have a dedicated PSOne for Playstation games nowadays (for that new gamer) isnt really worth it in the parents OR Sony's eyes (and for some reason if they want one, you can get a used one for about 20 bucks at any GameStop/EB store). Why dump an extra 50 just on a system that can only play a small portion of the games that you can buy new, when you can get that shiny new PS2 that can not only play that ALL the older stuff but those sweet new 3D games that all the kiddies love as well. I dont know the last time I was in a store and heard a kid say "Mom I want a PlayStation", but I cant count the number of times that ive heard "Mom I want a PS2". New customes are drawn in by NEW stuff, not older stuff that doesnt look anything like what is being produced for its bigger brother the PS2.

    3. Though Sony will I guess possibly have 3 systems (PsP, PSOne, PS2) running in the market at the same time (though its highly unlikely). Sony has stated time and time again that they are a 2 system creature. The PsP will be the second system starting in Early '05 and with the market base that they have currently (which is something close to 70-75%) they can float on their big upcomming Xmas titles to get them selves thru to the spring with out the PSOne. Almost all sales for anything PlayStation are now in the used dept, which Sony gets nothing from so why would they feel the need to support the system any more than they have for the last 10 years. They have the market base to know that they have a HUGE following of gaming customers who will buy the new stuff that they produce, not the older things that have been sitting on the shelf for a while.

Papastu...I think the total worldwide PSX sales *alone* are over 100 million, not couting the Playstation2.

What are the 15 games that arent compatible? I was under the impression that all of them were, but I'm obviously mis-informed.

They all work from the PS to the PSOne. But the PS2 does have some issues with a few older titles (most of which arnt great or ones that you need to own) Wing Commander III and Tomba!2 both spring to mind but i honestly dont remember the other ones.

I could be wrong on this, but I heard somewhere Mortal Kombat Trilogy was another one.

I had serious problems with Grandia locking up on my PS2 during battle scenes.

Contrary to popular belief, Final Fantasy Anthology and Chronicles both worth fine on the PS2.

We'll just agree to disagree. Obviously Sony thinks having a budget console on the market is worthwhile to attract those moms/dads who don't want to spend $150 on a PS2. Else, the PSone model would not exist. (Sony would have killed the PS1 in 2000 like Nintendo killed the N64.)

Also, I didn't say it before, so I'll say it now. Your initial message "Wow great thinking Musical...." was extremely rude. It's not necessary to take that tone of voice. I expressed my opinion, and you disagreed. Fine. But the rudeness was not necessary.

2 things and I'll leave things at where they sit.

Why would Sony go and kill the system in 2000? It was still THE system to own and had games in heavy production well into late 2002 mid 2003 (when the budget games became like water) and even the N64 was still going around until 2002 (with maybe A game in 2003) but they didnt stop the system run 2 years before. If Nintendo had done that it would have been completely pointless to make games for the amount of time that they did afterwords.

If you bothered to read my full line for that line, instead of just those first 4 words then you'd see that it was in response to errors in what you originally wrote. Im not saying anything bad about you, I'm saying that in response to the information that you posted that was incorrect. (Why I made the PS2 line) because I didnt know where you were going with that. For all I knew you very well could have thought that the PSOne was still at 100 bucks. Everything else after that was solid argument in both posts. I tend to be passionate when I argue, but I'm far from evol.

Hmmm...dead....I dunno. Just when is a system dead? I mean, shit, the atari 2600 is an old man, but people still make games for it...moreso than even the NES, afaict.

I have a feeling the PS is going to live a VERY long life in that manner. Just because the officials who make the machine call it dead, doesn't mean it is officially dead. A system is alive for as long as people make games for it. Or something.
