Lunch box packaging is seriously under-rated. I keep all my hand held games in lunch boxes. :P
I'm not sure from the pictures, but is the d-pad similar to the one used for the nes max (ie. slides around)? Or is it simply a big round button that functions like a normal d-pad? Hope I explained that well...
The top thumb grip does function like the NES MAX; it will rotate freely 360 degrees. But the actual d-pad functions more like a NeoGeo D-pad or an arcade stick without the stick of course It uses micro switches instead of the traditional rubber keys that were inside.
People who tried the controllers please let everyone know what you thought of the D-pad. The one thing to remember too is that the samples everyone tried were still in the prototype stage so there are still major issues that will be changed with the d-pad, so it will only get better when the final product is released.
I think what you will find is that after you get used to the d-pad you will like it.

You really shouldnt compare it to the NES max, because that thing (IMHO) sucks.

Ah geez. Now that you've answered I see that the back of the box descriped the controller. >.<
Thank you for responding though. You might want to know that on your website when you click on the Limited Edition snes controller it pops up an image of the NES version instead.
Yeah, the D-pad felt a LOT like the Neo Geo CD jellybean controller D-pad....same kinda feel, but much larger and more comfortable. I really REALLY liked it. So much that I preordered one of the finals for shipment to Canada Yay!

Although. Freaky. It works now. Maybe my browser had the NES image cached or something. Nevermind.
No we just happen to be updating the pictures when you clicked the first time. We wanted to get rid of the renderings. The real thing looks much better.
I can't wait until we get the rest of the rendering off the site.

That was actually one of my worries when I bought them. I would always prefer to see the original thing because as we've seen with some of the images people can create from nothing, it's just best to see the real deal and know it will look better in your hands.
Sorry... Couldn't stop myself after the in your hands comment....

And I just raised enough money to buy the NES set. Order has been placed.Originally Posted by Drexel923

I was pretty bummed about not being able to buy the sets and losing the rafflers...but at least I got a T-shirt and an autographed hat.
I wanted to post my initial feelings about the prototype NES controllers I received today. Overall, I'm very impressed! After about an hour or so of playing various games, I finally started getting used to the feel. They felt a bit off when I first started, but I think that's the extra sensitivity of the d-pad. I found myself making more deliberate motions to get the directions I wanted. I will say that Tecmo Super Bowl rocks with the extra sensitivity and easier diagonals. I'm sure there's other games that will benefit from this as well. It does seem easier to use the d-pad now that I've spent some time with it and Messiah has told me this is going to be addressed in the production units as well. Played some Tetris and Dr. Mario to see how it would do with a game that requires a bit more precision and I was able to play as well as I ever did. I think with just a little bit of a tweak, these will be perfect!
I haven't seen any glitches in the wireless and the speed of the controls feels dead on with the original pads. I've moved as far away from my system as I can (about 30 feet) with no effect on how they worked. I really like the more ergonomic grips on the back. They seem like they will be a lot easier to use for a long time, at least for me.
I did run into one game that didn't work, but I was told that as prototypes, there are games that won't work. I'll be reporting this to Messiah in the morning, but it's such an odd game that I doubt it will be an issue for very many people and I know that Messiah will have it fixed before the controllers ship (if they haven't fixed it already). Beyond this one game (and my toaster needing the cartridge jiggle every 2nd or 3rd game swap), I've had no problems whatsoever!
I haven't played with the turbo or slow features yet, but I'll do that tomorrow. I can't imagine any problems with these, but I'll post here after I try it.
Build quality is awesome. The controllers look and feel like they will take a beating and keep going. I like the fact that the receivers are very small as well. Makes it easy to stash them away! I can finally bury my system in my rack along with my xbox and gc. No more cords stretched across my living room!!!!
Even the packaging is cool. The manual is done in a comic book style that looks like an original NES manual! Messiah included a warranty card that has a large list of systems to choose from, so hopefully they will be doing more than just what they have announced (3do and TG-16 please!!).
It's safe to say that I'll be getting a set of the SNES controllers and probably a set of production NES controllers as well. From my email conversations with Brad, I am confident that Messiah is a company that will stand behind the product and make sure that people are happy. He's been very honest with me about what to expect from these prototypes and is genuinely interested in feedback from everybody. The shipping delay is kind of a bummer, but if it makes an already awesome product that much stronger, it's worth it!
If you spend any time at all on your NES, buy these! I wish I had won a set of the SNES controllers as well, but my luck only ran so far. I'm sure they are just as good as the NES ones, but maybe Marty can post his impressions for us. I'd like to know how the two different types compare.

You don't have a rabbit then, Radeon My rabbit likes to run into the living room and chomp my cords.....not good for dogbones at all
Hence the NEED for such a great controller....and my preordering them. They're DAMNED good controllers....I can't speak highly enough about them or the guys running playmessiah. I had a chance to talk with them a good bit at CGE and they're all REALLY nice guys and gals. Definitely a class act!

I noticed on the website for the controller it says:
I thought these were fro NES.....do they also work with SNES or something? You can be over 30 feet away from your SNES system and still enjoy the freedom of being wireless.
Typo?

I did have a small beef with the controllers myself: just a tad over-sensitive. But overall, they worked very, very well, and were quite comfy.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go back to lingering outside MarioAllStar2600's window... I mean, school. Yeah. School.
(Darn you, Marty!!! )
I Would want the snes ones prbly if I ever get a working snes(stupid cables I might just order some there after I sell some calculators) How many tickets to the raffle did you buy?
