Maybe it was due to my relative inexperience at the time I played them, but I always thought the Breath of Fire series was a good challenge. Xenogears and Tactics Ogre weren't especially hard, but you need to commit old-school levels of time into them.
I remember having a significant amount of trouble with FF IV easytype.
The 7'th Saga pissed me off. I quit playing the game pretty early into it.
hardest = longest?
Hardest RPG: Star Ocean - Second Story
hands down. Indalecio is the hardest final boss in the history of Console RPG's. I gave up so many times I thought the game was broke. The cave of trials in that game is just stupid hard and you have to do that it beat the final boss. Don't even get me started on the bunny shoes.. In the end I had to cheat just to get closure on the damn game like 8 months later and I STILL had problems.
Longest RPG: any MMORPG
Fear your thoughts because they become your words
Fear your words because they become your actions
Fear your actions because they become your habits
Fear your habits because they become your character
Fear your character because it becomes your destiny
Therefore: Thinking and nurturing positive thoughts, at any point in your life, can change your destiny.
Well I'd have to say Lufia 2. Not the normal game though that took me about 80 hours, the Ancient Dungeon. I probably put 30 hours into Ancient Dungeon, got to bottom a couple times but could not beat the boss (you only get a few attacks before he runs). In fact I don't know ANYONE who has beat the boss. No save available, if you want to try set aside about 4-8 hours to even give it a good try. The normal game is also known for having some tough puzzles, one of them pretty much impossible to solve (supposed to be hardest puzzle in video games). Lufia 2 is actually prequel to Lufia 1 by the way.

Try him with the power limiter off. A Private Action late in the game can make him about 2x harder than the boss of Cave of Trials. I never have made an effort to beat him that way, though. Like you, I had enough trouble just beating him normally.Originally Posted by Raedon
I'd have to say both the Tales series and Star Ocean series are the most tough-but-fair console RPGs I've played. The combination of real-time battle and the standard enemies that fight like bosses are a nice change from the games that pace your levelling to be equal or in excess of your enemies, robbing all tension and strategy from the gameplay.
I have to mention Dragon Warrior VII, not out of reverence (unlike the rest of the series), but because that damn game throws the occasional hideously one-sided fight at you (i.e. Hellcloud) that you can only win on pure luck.
7th saga....
I just had one, but forgot it looking for the puke icon....
damn...
Final Fantasy Tactics - Never could finish this one.
Alundra - Returned it because of the jumping involved.
Suikoden 3 had a hard end boss....
Chrono Trigger's end boss just due to the LENGTH of the battle.
Final Fantasy 5 - I hate job systems.

Phantasy Star 2. The dungeon with all the warps would be damn near impossible without a guide.
Chrono Trigger Boss: Easy if you do the side quests.
PSII: Touche. PSII was made to have that guide, which I think is a downer, personally. Wonder how the Sega Ages version will come out.
Oh yes, forgot that one I did it without guide though, that's just the way I am. Took a long time. And got killed once, was exploring/mapping so long I was low on items and weak, when I saw character to talk to thought they might help me, was the evil Nei, smoked my butt.Originally Posted by The_Chosen_One

7th saga was tough. So tough that I ended up giving the blasted game away.
I would have to agree with Raedon that Star Ocean Second Story was probably the hardest RPG game that I actuall BEAT. took a while, but it was such a gratifying feeling.
BTW: Sylentwulf - where did you get your avatar? (it's nice )

Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, its not that hard but damn some times I just need to save, plus its a 3 hour trek just to get to the final boss.
Xenogears, the final boss wasn't too bad after defeating the sub bosses. But the Sub bosses them selfs were WHORES!

DARK CLOUD?!?!?!
Probly one of the best and most innovative RPG's across this entire gen. of consoles!!!
Chrono Trigger wasn't overly HARD, just VERY LONG, and you COULD get into a pattern and die just because you're not paying attention anymore
Don't know where I got the avatar. It is fun to watch her though huh?

7th Saga definitly. Fighting the other apperntices was a pain in the ass!!
My Gaming Collection (Now at Google Drive!)
7th Saga was definitly hard. Few RPGs ever gave me as much hell as it did. Go ahead and power level your way thru it. Do it! See how effective it isnt. The only way to truely power your way thru that game is to do it by the numbers. Save before each level up and count your added points when you lev up. If the points total isnt enough to make you happy, just restart and load your save. Repeat as often as needed till desired result is achieved.
There was an RPG for the TG-16 I cant remember. It was a D&D title that was both hard and easy. At times the monsters you would meet were easy but even maped, there was one dungeon I could never solve (or leave once entered). The PW save feature was incredably hard to get right. Nine out of ten times I could never do it.
Come on man, you have to be kidding.Originally Posted by The_Chosen_One

Great to deal with: Leonk, AdamG, Cheesystick, DigitalPress, ButtaSuperb, Hydr0x, Darth Vader, Gary Gnu, Portnoyd, NexWave, Postermen, Kaine23, ARCZero, kai123, Buyatari, Minilek, DREW, bighab, AlanD, Flack
That would probably be "Order of the Griffon", perhaps my favorite console D+D game. Great music, great game, went by true D+D rules. PW saves sucked in general, too many letters that look like other letters or numbers. If you used the Turbo Booster you could save without using password and actually inside a dungeon, with password you would appear outside dungeon. Gosh that was a great gameOriginally Posted by Fuyukaze
