Default Differences between FDS Zelda and NES Zelda...

As stated in another topic, my Sharp Twin arrived in the mail today.

I promptly popped in "The Legend of Zelda" (with a little help from Cmosfm, actually) and fell in love.

    A question, though.

Besides the obvious (Japanese text, enhanced sound, loading times), are there any other gameplay differences between the Japanese FDS version and the U.S. NES version of "The Legend of Zelda?"

I ask because the game almost feels more responsive than the U.S. version... A little bit quicker, maybe. I might just be imagining things, though.

Besides the language, I diddn't notice much....granted I only made it to level nine, and did not beat level nine in the fds version...but no...no major differences I could see.

Kid Icarus, ion the other hand.....differences all over the place.

We should compare notes on the FDS and FC Cart versions sometime (my FDS copy is, of course, unopened...not much sense opening it at this point)!

Some sound effects are different, when link shoots his sword or when some monsters die, they'll make a different sound

the biggest difference is Zelda 2 FDS Vs. NES <-- alot of differences between the two, especially some graphic sprites
These cartridges are dirty as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

The big thing I noticed was the difference in sound quality and effects. On the FDS version the instruments in some of the music seem to sound nicer, and some of the sound effects are certainly cooler. For instance, compare the sound of the blast that a fully-powered Link's sword shoots out. Awesome.

That rumor about the rabbit things dying when you yell at them with the microphone turned out to be true.

Actually, maybe they're just paralyzed or something. I dunno. But it's been confirmed that something happens.

    Whoa.

Ima kill me some Pols Voice.

I notices all the sound differences. They are numerous. Nobody else agrees with me about the speed of the game, though?

"That rumor about the rabbit things dying when you yell at them with the microphone turned out to be true."

So that's the origin of that detail in the Zelda manual ("...doesn't like loud noises"). I always wondered about that, because they don't seem to give a shit about anything but arrows.

Reminds me of something...thread coming up...

I could have sworn they respond to the flute in some manner. Maybe I'm thinking of Digdogger, though.

If you look carefully, the Zoras look a bit different in the FDS version from the US version.

Also seems Pols Voices are completely immune to arrows in the FDS version. (As well as the Fami rerelease.)

Why was Zelda remade from the Famicom cart to the Famicome disk system version?

actually it's the other way around...in 1991 and 1992 Nintendo re-released many Famicom games in cart format....one of them being Super Mario USA (our Mario 2 in the USA) ported to Japan and a re-release of Zelda in cart format.

While we got re-releases of Metroid, Punch-Out (removing Mike Tyson), Zelda 1, and Zelda 2 during that same year

    like this one

Pretty much just a re-release promo I'd say
These cartridges are dirty as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

    Yep!

I just noticed that the Zoras look different. Very slightly, though.

As for Pols Voices being immune to arrows in the FDS version, I noticed that when I played the GBA SP re-release of the Famicom version of "The Legend of Zelda."

Very strange. I guess Japanese gamers are up for more of a challenge than we are.

What does "Pols Voice" stand for anyway? Guess the name makes more sense now with them being hurt by you screaming. That's so cool. And unique. You don't see too many games like that now. With funky features like that.

I'm guessing they were immune to arrows, cause their weakness was the Famicom mic. Since US gamers were without a mic on their Nes', Nintendo decided to make the arrows their weakness to make things balanced.

If you were to play the US Zelda on a Famicom using a US to Fami adapter, I wonder if shouting into the mic would still hurt the Pol's Voices? Or if Nintendo completely took it out? I wish I could check it myself, but the AV Famicom doesn't have a mic built into it like the old style one does. Bah.

That's the way I see it. Though, I'd prefer they put a Mic on the NES. That would have been cool.

That is a really awesome idea! I would like to test this on many mic games...

The onlly musical differences I noticed are in the title screen and in the last dungeon. Level 9 is very slight though...they add 8 beats of the bass before starting the rest of the tune. Seems the cart (or at least the USA version) goes right into the creepy tune. I did not check out the ending music tho.

Imho, virtually every fds game I've played with enhanced music is inferior to the cart versions...it just sounds so much better to me on the carts.

Maybe I'm loony, but does anyoneelse feel this way?
