Default Best port to B&W Game Boy

My only request is that this be about ORIGINAL Game Boy games, not Color or Advance titles.

By port I mean a conversion from an arcade original or other console to the Game Boy. However, feel free to mention games in a series which converted well over to the Game Boy if you feel so inclined (Castlevania, Mario, Metroid all come to mind) if that's what you'd like to add.

    My votes thus far:

Operation C (Super C port/upgrade). Much better than the arcade game; level structure is very interesting in this one. Aside from the kickass gameplay, this game sports THREE variants of the Konami Code (too bad you can't use the 10 lives code before the level select, heh) and level one is totally redone with the classic Contra level one tune. I don't feel the top-down alien hive stage fares quite as well as on the NES, but all the same it's greatly enjoyable stuff. Even the bullet flicker on pause is included! Bug: In the first top-down stage, if you walk to the top of the screen while fighting the APC which attacks from below the screen won't scroll again unless you walk back a little bit.

Ninja Spirit (Irem classic). There's a few points where enemies can be hard to see (crouching gunmen in particular), but the glorious float-and-slash gameplay of the arcade game is intact, right down to the ability to have not one shadow (Ninja Gaiden style), but TWO. True to the arcade game, again, they float. You can still stab downwards through the first level's planks with your sword. The gigantic stage one boss is here, redrawn to (barely) fit the Game Boy's screen. Sadly, as far as I know this release is exclusive to Japan.

Honorable mention: Ninja Gaiden Shadow. I don't really like the Ninja Gaiden badge on there as the signs point towards this really being a Shadow of the Ninja title, but that doesn't make the game any less fun. A Ninja Gaiden game for the rest of us. Seeing how this doesn't seem to be a real port of any game (though it has some similarities to Shadow of the Ninja for NES, the levels are all different), I can't really include it in the list of ports.

Not so honorable mention: R-Type DX (and B&W predecessors R-Type and R-Type II, included on the cart). For me, the original R-Type isn't much to get hyped over, and while this is a nice, solid port with colors that will also play on an original Game Boy, I barely manage to remember I own it. Not a bad attempt at all - just not terribly exciting.

I'd like to add Contra: The Alien Wars for B&W GameBoy

It was a pretty decent port of the SNES Contra 3 I thought. A few bosses were missing, but it did the job nicely, plus if you had a Super GameBoy, you get a neat sound effect of explosions when a bomb was set off
These cartridges are dirty as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

Exodus NES to GB heheh, it got even funnier and more blasphemous. On a serious note I didn't play games before GB so I dont really know whats a port and what different lol. It's sad I have like 100 unique games too. I should do some research...
I collect Game Boy games and Systems. Currently looking for any R4 or R6 GB games (and a select few R5) available. PM if you got something.

Under the port category I would nominate Elevator Action, which I think pretty faithfully recreates the gameplay of the original game.

I would nominate Kid Icarus as a non-port. Obviously it is a totlly different game, but once again I think it faithfully recreates the gameplay of Kid Icarus on the NES.

    Don't feel bad

I'll help you out..I had that game too...it was pretty nice what they did with it on Super GameBoy, matching each background to it's SNES counterpart

World Heroes 2 Jet on GBY was the bomb

Samurai Shodown on GBY was sweet and probably one of the best reasons to fight someone over a GameBoy 2 player mode

    Fatal Fury 2 was badass

Battle Arena Toshinden on GBY was nice

Real Bout Fatal Fury Special for GBY was a nice touch

The King of Fighters 95' on GBY....ah yeah....memories right there

So many great games for the B&W GB, but as for ports, Operation C is one of my favorite B&W GB games. Haven't played Alien Wars for the GB, so I can't speak for that one. I really enjoyed the original Star Wars game for NES, even though I'm not much into the franchise. That was ported to the GB and seemed to be identical, although I haven't really played that version.

Edit: I really did enjoy Killer Instinct at the time of it's release, but now I just really dislike that era of highres 3D rendered graphics scaled down to sloppy 2-bit low resolution sprites that blend it so much with the background it's nearly impossible to play (has anyone finished the first level of Batman Forever for the B&W GB? heh).

It may be a stretch mentioning the 94 version of Donkey Kong... But HEY! Any chance I get to mention how much I frickin' LOVE that game, I will!!!

Good question. It's funny, but I love Earthworm Jim for the BWGB better than any of the other versions that have come out for the Color and Advance systems. The control is tight and, considering the limitations, they manged to squeeze in most - if not all of the levels - as well as the music. An amazing adaptation and the only GB Grey cart I take with me when I travel.

Some games aren't GBC, but are Super GB enhanced...

But yeah, I'll second Donkey Kong if that counts.

DK '94 all the way. Kept me entertained for months. Kicks ass and is slightly better than Mario vs. DK.

I love GB Donkey Kong (or DK 94.. whatever). But I don't think it's a good port of Donkey Kong even though it has a semblance of the initial 4 levels of the arcade game. No.. I'm still waiting for that

I thought the GB version of Gradius/Nemesis was pretty good. GB Double Dragon compares well to the NES version also. And of course, Link's Awakening was an extremely respectable entry in the series.

The GB Gradius, Interstellar Assault, isn't a port - far as I can tell. It certainly has more differences as far as level layout go than Operation C did compared to Super Contra/Super C.

I agree about DD, though; not my favorite BEU but I'm happy to have this cartridge.

I'll toss out Ducktales and Adventure Island II (which is actually a port of NES Adventure Island III). There's probably better out there, but my experience is limited.

(Technically, Blaster Master: Enemy Below contains entirely separate GBC and B&W code and could have been released on the B&W Game Boy without any difficulty, but I guess that doesn't count.)
