It's debatable which is the rarest, though it's probably James Buster Douglas Boxing or Alex Kidd in Shinobi World.
Definitely Buster Douglas Boxing.
Click Rarity Guide above. Then select SMS and US Releases from the left side. Click "submit".
You can then sort the list by rarity and see our rankings from hardest to easiest.
You plumped for Alex Kidd in this thread, Joe.Originally Posted by digitalpress

How does a Power Strike with blue/white packaging stack up in terms of rarity? The guide says that it's an R7 and "much harder to find in the blue/white packaging". The guide also recommends it and says that it was listed as one of the "99 Favorite Classics" by Digital Press in 1997 (unlike the other R7 games on the Master System).
Like Castle of Illusion, Power Strike is cerainly up there in rarity terms, but I'm pretty sure it's not on the same kind of level as JBDB and Shinobi World.
Without a doubt James Buster Douglas Boxing (for me personally). I just paid 95 dollars for it:

If you ever saw my "screwed by goldduster" thread, he never got the game because the guy wanted more for it, lol, so I got it but at a much higher price.
I got probably the second rarest SMS game (Shinobi World) from this guy:

One hell of a kick ass BIN.
And I was lucky enough to get power strike in this lot:

So I've been lucky getting all my SMS stuff. I got a boxed Castle of Illusion recently in a lot but want a complete one, so check your PM, LoL. I think the last two games Im going to have to find are Sonic and Golden Axe Warrior. I never see Golden Axe Warrior come up on ebay...there's a boxed one right now but I must have the manual. Sonic will be near impossible I think. Is it really a PAL box with a us barcode? My Strider is like that but my spiderman has some sticker on the barcode that says "Part of pack only, not to be returned seperately"......do you have a picture of the box, cart and manual for the PAL strider and spiderman cauterize?
Super Monaco GP is quite a toughie.
Holy cow, I didn't realize those games were so rare. My wife bought me an SMS 2 back in 1993 when KayBee was closing them out. She got me a bunch of games, and then I bought what I needed from what was left. Buster Douglas was one of them, so I guess I lucked out. And this was even before I started collecting seriously. Yay for Sarah! She also bought me an SNES for a wedding present, and she traded in the Playstation she won at work to get me a Genesis 2. Ain't she sweet! My wife rules!

And to think I got my CIB Castle of Illusion for free
Buster Douglas is the hardest by a margin- did this game even receive overseas release? Usually it's the overseas/Canada availability that kills perceived rarity of many tough to find US releases.
I still don't have it and it should be the final N.American cart I need. Problem is that I list all SMS together, so I'm only halfway through the entire collection, which will take a while to gather since it's so heavily 'import' for me here in the US.

IMO the two hardest games to find are Buster Douglas Boxing and Slap Shot. (blue label = NTSC)
Castle of Illusion is hard to find, but I don't think it should be rated an R7. R5 or R6 imo.
Power Strike is also hard to find and same with shinobi world.
Bah, I've never found Power Strike, or Castle of Illusion all that hard to find. Sure, they'll take some looking, but you'll find a dozen of each before you find a Buster Douglas.
Slap Shot is tough to find, but not impossible. And a TRUE US Shinobi World is pretty rare. And you'll know you've got a true US copy if it has a blue label.
And a fun fact: George Foreman boxing (a euro release) on the SMS is a hack of Buster Douglas. I guess Akklaim was too lazy to program something from scratch.
Maybe I've been lucky, but I've found Castle of the Illusion in the wild 3 times - twice loose and once in a box. I've still yet to find Buster Douglas's Boxing.
Slap Shot is the last rare one I need. From there I only need a handful of commons/uncommons to finish.
Edit.... this isnt true anymore, I sold some of my rares dut to financial difficulty. Buster Douglous got me over $100 and around 40-50 for Super Monaco. I held onto Shinobi World and Castle of Illusion.... for now.

Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, IT'S BACON!!!!
I've got a few Euro games with that sticker aswell - they must have been included in a bundle deal (posisbly an after-market one) at some point. The only difference between that and the 'genuine' US one is the barcode sticker, so it depends how picky you're being Ditto Sonic - is it worth paying many times the price of a Euro copy simply for the US barcode sticker, when it sells for about £1 on eBay UK?Originally Posted by -hellvin-

I know this is an old thread but I just ran into it while searching for something else. I can't believe you guys are going so crazy over AK: Shinobi World. This game is not hard to find at all (comparatively). I've sold two in the last month and a half on eBay. U.S. versions of course. There is one thing that is a *fact* and most serious SMS collectors should know already. The hardest two U.S. SMS games to find, hands down, are Sonic and Buster Douglas. No other game is even close. I have personally come across multiple copies of every other U.S. SMS game in the last six months alone. There are no other U.S. SMS games that sell for over $50 on eBay every single time they are offered. Including the last Christmas season I have only seen three Buster Douglas games and one U.S. Sonic on eBay. The Busters went for at least $80 each and the Sonic, which was in a lot with a Power Base and a couple other games (also sold by someone I know, which burned me up. Afterwards he was like "I wish I would've known you needed it, we could've traded" ARGGGH.) went for *$250*!!! And the Sonic before that which was sold by iteself went for $350. I know some of you will say eBay is not a good example. I don't agree. These games are almost never in game stores. Finding them in the wild is like winning the lottery. So realistically eBay is the only place all of us have equal access to that has these kinds of games.
As for an additional list of the next rarest games, here's my opinion:
Group 2:
Super Monaco GP
Power Strike
Group 3:
Slap Shot
AK: Shinobi World
Castle Of Illusion
Strider
Spider-Man
Group 4:
Alf
Golden Axe Warrior
King's Quest
Montezuma's Revenge
That's just in my experience but I do go through about 200 SMS games every month so there is a solid basis there. That's about it. If you can find these games getting every other game for the system should be easy.
