wich current generation system will last the longest in YOUR opinion meaning software support from both first and third party companies?

My pick is the PS2. The PSX had quite a lifespan, and Sony has even stated that they believe the PS2 can continue to sell until 2010.
You're not seriously asking this, right? You're just seeing how many Nintendo fanbois-in-denial you can draw out of the woodwork, right?Originally Posted by sabre2922

Microsoft claims that their next console will come out sometime next year, so xbox is out. As far as nintendo and sony go though, who knows? Sony is still milking the playstation and nintendo is still rumored to be releasing their next system in 06. So It could be anyone's guess.

PS2. Duh.
hmm i thought there would be at least SOME debate on this
The GameCube is on life support. The Xenon/Xbox 2 is coming shortly. The PS2 has sold more than twice as many hardware units as Xboxes and GameCubes combined, and Sony has already made clear its intent to support the PS2 well beyond the typical five-year lifespan, as it did with the PS1. What's to debate?Originally Posted by sabre2922

Not to mention the fact that, like the PS2, the PS3 will be backwards compatible. That will keep game companies deveoping for it for a long, long time.Originally Posted by zmweasel
In my opinion, I think Microsoft and Nintendo are going to want to try to beat Sony to the punch on a new console, in hopes of taking the top spot and having an decent library in place and a strong user base installed when the PS3 is ready to launch. And Sony made it too easy for me not to pick the PS2, what with what I mentioned earlier about how they hope the PS2 will sell until 2010. I'm sure Sony will have the PS3 out a few years before that, and they'll employ the same tactics with the PS2 as they did with the PSX. And as Flack stated, backwards compatibilty will help a lot as it did with the PSX.Originally Posted by sabre2922
I don't see the Gamecube's lifespan going beyond that of the PS2, unless Nintendo makes their next console backwards compatible, and I highly doubt they'd do that. It's a safe guess that Nintendo will sell it as a budget system as they have done with their previous consoles, but this will only last for 1-2 years, and if Nintendo does release their next console in 2006 as someone stated, the last Gamecube release would be seen in 2007 or 2008 at the latest.
This wasn't a bad idea for a thread in the least, it's just that the answer is too obvious.
Off topic, who's the chick in your avatar?
It doesn't really matter if Nintendo/Microsoft beat Sony to the punch with a new system/library. Sony's genious backwards compatablility allows them to have a huge collection the day the console is released. Thats why its so hard to beat sony, look at the thousands of games you can play on it.
Ps2 just like the PSX it'll never go away, IE Fifa 2005.

NO, that doesn't mean XBOX is out. You have never heard OR didn't know that game companies still make games for a certain system when it's new system is out???? How long have you played games??Originally Posted by testament89
But no really, Nintendo has stated before that they plan on making GC games long after the "Evolution" is out. Which is really cool!!
Well, Sony already has a year head start on the latter systems. And they still make PS1 games. (But that is ONLY because they are compatible with PS2!!) I am pretty sure PS3 won't be compatible with any other games but PS3 games??? I think I heard that??

I'd have to say.....The GBA. I'm sorry but I just dont see any of the systems surviving 5 or more years of use. I know the GBA isnt considered a console system, but I dont consider CD based systems to have a long life span as once the CD/GDR/DVD player goes out, the entire thing becomes at best spare parts.
Since the Playstation went for almost a decade , I gotta go with PS2

I didn't say that microsoft or other third parties would stop making games for the xbox, just that they would focus more on the xenon. This topic was about which current console do you think will have the longest lifespan, and seeing as how microsoft said it's new system sould be out around this time next year I'd say yes, that pretty much would count it out.

I dunno. Given the current trickle of software, I predict a situation more akin to the period between the N64 and Gamecube. But no really, Nintendo has stated before that they plan on making GC games long after the "Evolution" is out. Which is really cool!!
Where's the logic in that? They aren't still putting the yearly sports games on the ps1 because it's compatible with the ps2. They put them there for the broke folks who haven't upgraded yet. There is no sense in buying a ps1 game for your ps2 when there is a superior ps2 version.Well, Sony already has a year head start on the latter systems. And they still make PS1 games.
